We went to Wyaralong a few weeks ago, and watched a little kid lose a front wheel assembly off a Chinese quad going up a contour bank. Closer inspection showed it was only a grub screw retainer that held it on in the first place. The kid said it happens all the time, and his dad would fix it.
To our amazement, 1/2 later this kid was on the MX track trying to do the jumps! Wheres the scrutineering, as this is a disaster waiting to happen? _________________ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~

did you go and say anything to them, Chinese bikes are no different to any bike, poor maintenance is to blame or poor judgement from scrutineers. _________________ Bill Case

Like the ones that are made to a set price because the client who ordered the entire consignment of a set number of units, does not have particularly moderate standards of construction in the design brief?
Or do you mean the ones that are built to a international standard for a different price to a Japanese, Northern Continental American or European client?
And "China bikes" refers to most of Asia, not China specifically.

And to the OP. Some more info please.
Was it just the kids putterring around the pee wee track in a non competitive situation?
Or were they actually competing? With marshalls and flaggies?

All good points Dino.
Also, these days a lot of the parts for Jap bikes are made in China.
If this problem happens "all the time" it obviously wasn't fixed properly the first time. _________________

Hi, and yes we did, although it was the bikes design that was the issue. Only re-engineering would have fixed the problem. _________________ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~

G'day. It was non-competitive but online of the senior tracks.
I suppose my main concern is seeing these bikes break in situations they are not designed for and subsequently injuring people. Our daughter bought a cheap pit bike and it did not last at all (cracked frame), and I have seen quite a few others that fall apart after some moderate riding. _________________ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~

My sons old quad has a pit bike frame under it and it has cracked several times but keeping an eye on it and doing lots of work to it has made it strong enough now for his abuse, on the same note my other sons Pro shark has a cracked frame and so did my Gas Gas quad, as said before all quads are equal in the point that you get what you pay for, well atleast most of the time. I know there are some very dangerous bikes out there but there are some pretty good copies. _________________ Bill Case

give the boy some loctite or a different bolt & teach the kid to keep an eye on it {very 2 laps boy stop and look make shore it's not coming out!} as for the question Should cheap imported quads be allowed on MX tracks? aren't all quads imported, but yes of course it just adds to the drama : Don't traveling shows like Crusty Demons jump pit bikes like 100ft up and long and don't we love it when thay do?

nope, they shouldn"t thats why my daughter now rides a raptor 90, although made in china also. the old saying goes you pay for what you get , obviously these quads are cheap for a reason, I agree they are a cheap way for kids to have fun but thats it . they are not designed to be jumped or raced for that matter. the only good thing about them is if something breaks or fails, those parts are replaced alot cheaper.
But if you choose to get one for your kids maintenance is compulsary these bolts need tightening , batteries need checking or replacing, wheels on axles need retightening, swing arm bolts and bushes need retightening. steering brackets need replacing lower and top A arm ball joints need tightening , check for cracks on the frame and also check all electrical wiring reguarly . but do all this and you will be fine. but soon you will get sick of this too. |

shouldnt you be doing all these sorts of checks on any bike regularly though? while there build qualitites may not be as high as others, with a bit of common sense they are great value bikes. |

It must be great to have a bike you don't have to maintain.

| sure is, at least the kids can enjoy riding a quad knowing , its not going to breakdown , wheels come loose or it wont start. i am not being biased against cheap chinese quads at all but , sooner or later you have to start thinking are these too dangerous for kids to ride when all this happens. After owning a new better quality quad compared to a new Cheaper chinese quad, you soon work this out for yourself. apart from your servicing these are maintennance free. |

Surley its the old use the right tool for the job thing. Theres no point in buying a brand new limited edition injected raptor to ride it twice a year in a loca lcrop paddock ride but at the same time you dont try to put a 20 year old atc on a competiton track _________________ Tremble with fear - I've had an idea |

This is one of the most bias threads ever. Almost made me not want to join this forum.
If i was a quad bike it would be racist. As a Chinese quad bike owner i find it insulting, whats next? 4x4 Quads be banned from MX tracks>?. |

Not sure why you'd want to bother racing mx on a 4x4 anyway..
I think what it comes down to is where the line can be drawn, because there are some high quality bikes that come out of China like the Raptor 90. However there are some absolute shockers that are built to an atrociously dangerous standard. |

Na mate that comment is redundant, As for death toll/serious injury all the major brand names stand on top of that list and its a fact. Chinese quads look like Qantas compared to the rest.
So is it a case of Riders error with there "Name" branded quads causing death/injury? Or are they built as death machines for inexperience riders.
I guess this thread could go on and on, But facts are facts and as bad as a lot of chinese imports are they don't kill/injure people as name brands do. |

Are you serious?! That's because they sell over ten-fold the volume of any chinese brand! There are that many different types/brands of chinese quad that there are going to be hardly any registering large figures. |

Royz, most Chinese quads are crap. as are a lot of other products that come in from China... rarely are the words "China" and "Quality" present in the same sentence (unless the words "lack of" are also present.
Biased? perhaps a little, but at this point, still a pretty accurate call. Sure, some of the more expensive Chinese quads are getting better, but the cheap ebay crap... is still just that... crap....
As with most things in life, you get what you pay for...
Couple of reasons why there are more reported inuries on Jap quads then Chinese spring to mind...
First, after 5 or 6 years, the Japanese bikes are still running.. not for sale as basket cases on ebay for $300.
Second, Japanese Quads rule the roost on farms, because (as above) after 10 years, they still go... so Farmers buy em... and then they ride them without due care, or even a helmet, and get hurt/ killed....
Third, most Chinese quads are ebay type 90/110/125 cc "powered", whilst they will go fast enough to hurt you, they wont gest anywhere near a Jap/ Us bike for top speed... 30 mph crash hurts... 70 mph hurts a lot more...
If somebodies' opinion (in this case, mine) stops you from visiting this site, then you probably dont belong on the internet, because differences of opinion are fairly common...
My hat goes off to you for the enginuity you are showing in your China Quad resto thread... I am interested in how it turns out... Honestly, I wouldnt have bothered...

Hold up, i never said race a 4x4 or china quad on a MX track?. Im pointing to the fact everyone should be aloud to use whatever brand ATV they have on a open MX track be it a 4x4 or china made stuff. Racing is a different story.
And MX5 i never said anything about leaving the forum, I stated it made me think twice about joining it. So why the personal attack?. Got a case of SDS?. |

There are still liability issues whether it's on an open mx track or an mx race. If clubs acted negligently and allowed riders to use whatever bike in whatever condition they pleased there is the potential for loads of law suits when these quads/mx bikes break.
There wasn't anything personal in Wa5's post, besides congratulating you on your ingenuity. Honestly couldn't have agreed with his whole post more. |
