Hey, new here.
Im going to be getting an atv next year mainly for hunting but also a little play. I have always had 2 wheelers so pretty new to 4.
I will want to carry a bit of gear and maybe a dog, 4wd with diff locks. Have been reading the manual vs cvt debate for hunting, thoughts?
Open to suggestions and budget will stretch to about 12.

CVT is way easier than manual.
A lwb 2 seater is a better in hilly country, or anything involving gullys with the option of carrying a 2 legged passenger in comfort and safety. The slightly longer ones loose some manoeverability, and don't quite fit in a 6x4 trailer, however.
A 500cc with about twenty litres of fuel tank gives a pretty good range.
CF Moto on left and TGB on right.
The TGB is very well set up.......
Both of those meet your criteria. If you get onto the crew at Far North Quad Riders, you can talk to some very keen quad mounted hunters, and they use a variety of machines.

Guys, i am hearing that the trx420fpa is pretty rough on gear changes? Have heard that a lot of people are not happy with them.
What are the Kingquad 500 PSteers like? |

Dino's advice is spot on.
I'll add a biased opinion here, but only from having ridden them.
Check out the Can-Am Outlander XT500
They are one of the best value for money packages as far as performance, getting the job done and long list of features.
They are a very easy ride, and not scary.
Accessories are good, and commonality with all of the bigger models means there is tones of aftermarket stuff around too.
For an extra $650 between base models, I would personally always choose the Outlander 500 over the 400, just because of the smoother V-twin operation and cooler exhaust note.

Do the Canams have many dramas?
It will mainly be used for slow work in and around creeks at walking pace and for mustering, and obviously a bit of play 
No overheating issues?

Quite a few CanAm people in the Far North Quad Riders Club, based in Cairns. Maybe get onto them.
