 |
|
I have a 2006, fuel injected, Suzuki 450 Kingquad for the farm. It was going fine when I purchased it a few months ago, but has developed the problem of stalling when left to idle. I replaced the spark plug and air filter. Slight improvement. Put it in to be serviced. The mechanic said he would investigate with Suzuki. He suggested fuel sensor or exhaust sensor as possibilities. As it is fuel injected I have no clue what to do as he hasn't found out anything since.
Any suggestions on what may be problem or where to make further enquiries? |

How old is the fuel in the tank.... if its over 6 weeks replace it with new...
Fuel goes "off" a lot quicker than it used to....
I would also suggest if you leave the bike idle for a while... that you run it on Premium IE, fuel that does not contain ethanol, it seems to go "off" quicker (in my opinion). |

how long does it idle for before it stalls?
5 seconds, 30 seconds, 2 minutes?
this will change my diagnosis... |

Could be temp sensor related. If the sensor still thinks it's cold (wrong signal to ECU) then it may idle rich all day, or until it fouls up.
Does it clean up after a good high speed run and idle ok until it clags up again after a while.
Another high speed / high load run and it cleans the plug up again until left idling again.
maybe ??? _________________ Can-Am X Team

| sounds like it is a blocked fuel filter on the fuel pump, can be checked by checking fuel pressure both on start up & running. if low means damaged fuel pump or blocked filter.turns in to a big job to check as you have to remove rear guards & remove fuel tank, but as it is an older bike wouldnt hurt to do it as then you will know. |

The Kingquad has an in tank car type fuel pump with a filter over the end of it. Sometimes these get clogged up with dirt.......Its common.
You need to remove the tank and then remove the whole fuel pump/filter assembly (its a simple job) The filter unit can be ordered from Suzuki OR take it down to Repco (for about 1 tenth of the price) as I know some car units fit.

| again check all your earths, at idle voltage may be dropping to the point the ecu shuts down, or fuel pump etc. when the bike revs it makes more voltage = no problem. |

the ecu have a default value dude if the temp sensor is not working wont cause the symptom he describes but you knew that hey
i did not say check the ecu i said get your mechanic to check the tps voltage (output) whole range also does a king quad have a exhaust sensor ?
take it to a Suzuki dealer |

in my experience with EFI quads symptoms like this are almost always fuel pump related. Fuel pressure for most EFI bikes/quads should be around 39 to 49 PSI depending on the model and if it is more than 2 or 3 PSI below its spec can cause the sort of problems you are having. For example a Polaris RZR fuel pump needs to have 39 PSI but one measured at 35/36 PSI, the RZR wouldn't idle and needed the throttle opened to start and ran rough when it was running. Replace fuel pump, starts, idles etc... _________________

| Petes right, fuel pump needs to hold about 42- 45 PSI ( from memory ) even at decent throttle. --- dirty fuel destroys pumps quickly and this is definitely the most common problem. Can't recall exactly but I think this model has a "stepping up" motor ,( ISC ), on the throttle body. there is a factory service bulletin about cleaning these things properly and not to use some of the aggressive carb cleaners that can damage its internals. When they get gummed up the idle becomes erratic. |
