Can someone please enlighten me (I'm electrically challenged) on the difference between a "normally open" & "normally closed" type kill switch, & how they work ?
I'm told I need to have a "closed" swith on the 700xx, is that because of EFI ?
I'm confused _________________ The term "Foolproof" seriously underestimates the ingenuity of Fools.

Normally open means that no continuity exists through the switch in it's normal position.
Normally closed means that continuity exists through the switch in it's normal position.
On some set lanyard set ups, like outboard motors, when the clip at the switch end pulls out, as in man overboard, the switch is activated to turn off the motor.
It either earths the electrical supply to the spark out ( normally open ) OR cuts the electrical supply to the spark. ( Normally closed. )
Clear as mud eh? _________________ Remember. We elect politicians, but we have to deal with bureaucracy.

Ok, so my old kill switch on my 400ex used to run to earth from the coil wire via the switch, that makes it a "normally open" switch ?
So if I get a "normally closed" switch for the xx I need to wire it to the two handlebar kill switch wires , whereby when the tether is pulled it interrupts the positive power that runs through the switch, instead of earthing out. Is this correct ?
I think my brain is shorting out just tryin to get my head around it.

Yep. When you threw the switch, it earthed out the spark.
So if I get a "normally closed" switch for the xx I need to wire it to the two handlebar kill switch wires , whereby when the tether is pulled it interrupts the positive power that runs through the switch, instead of earthing out. Is this correct ?
NOT QUITE.
Yes, you only need to wire it to a wire feeding one of the kill switches.
Whatever sort that kill switch is now, is the sort of tether switch you want to put in.
If your kill switch earths out the spark, then you want your tether switch to do the same.
OR
If your kill switch cuts the spark, then you want your tether switch to do the same.
Get that sorted and it's beer o'clock.
Tip: Put a tempory fuse in if your not sure. Fuses are cheaper to replace than CDI', and fuel programmers.

Clutch start it by licking a 9 volt battery. Works for me. _________________ Remember. We elect politicians, but we have to deal with bureaucracy.

Well, bought a new switch, one with two sets of terminals, one for "open" circuit & one for "closed",set it up for closed, works fine.
Thanks all. _________________ The term "Foolproof" seriously underestimates the ingenuity of Fools.
