| I've seen lately a few people running skinny rear tyres at different races. What are the benefits of doing this and does it cause any problems? |

Skiny tires are usually 22/8/10 or 23/7/10 . They are normaly used in Desert style races and because of the height of the tire gives better gearing for higher top speeds and also better ground clearance. The size also gives added benefit from the standard 22/11/9 that it is lighter and for some machines it will require less horsepower to rotate. I use the 22/8/10 Kenda Bearclaw ( 6 Ply ) and it is a really hard wearing tire and extremely puncture resistant. It is readily available in Australia and is very cheap compared to razr 2 22/11/9 or even Parker DT or ITP Gncc of similar size.
The Bombardier race team in South Africa starting using them on the DS 650's in the National offroad races. They gave extremely stable ride at high speed especially where there were two tracks created by a normal vehicle with a raised hump of grass in the middle. The skinny tires fitted perfectly into the tracks so the back end of the quad stayed planted instead of kicking from side to side. _________________ Its not if you win or lose but how you enjoyed the ride! |

| how do they compare in a straight line drag race for traction compared to some razr 2's 22/11/9? |

You are right Dale, but they were not the Kenda's, they were the BKT. Since I put the Kenda's on I have not had any issues.
I had them on my DS as well as the outlaw and I can slide the back end just as easily on both quads, so I dont know where you get that Idea from...? _________________ Its not if you win or lose but how you enjoyed the ride! |

dosent this just confirm there the same on both quads?
being either both "profanity removed" or both good?
i want to know how the traction compares to a set of proper rears? |

Old Vicus VanDeventer (South Africa) rocked up to 2008 Safari with skinny rears, and since then a lot of people have coppied.
I asked Vicus half way through the event "why the skinny rear tyres".
He said "I run them and sometimes and they are good. But they are not working well for me in Australia. Your conditions are too sandy. I wish I could swap them now, but I can't, I only have limited spares and I could not bring more tyres with me."
He thought they were a mistake, but there are good and bad points.
I think 9 inch wide rears might be the best compromise, but they are hard to find.
The ones Smitty runs on the back look like the best width I have seen. _________________ Can-Am X Team

ive ridden with pred and i was amazed how good the the skinny tyres are, it does take a bit to get used to , especially when a quad normally has skinny fronts and wide rears. but i can definatley say they work just as well , if not better when it comes to trails. dont knock em until you try them, , but they may only work good on certain bikes, but as far as preds bikes they work awesome,
as far as take off it has no problems with traction. hope this helps. |

vicus also had a lacky band wraped round his throttle & just turn the big 700 off & on to slow down or speed up dont think tyres were his biggest issue
hey skip

any sand drag tyres or similar are allways bigger and wider the better for traction.
i cant believe a front tyre on the rear can possibly grip effectively.
maybe in hard terain where grip isnt a issue,
but on soft sandy country its a ludicrus idea. |

We run 27x12 x 9 mudzillas allround on our canam renegades and they cause no problems with loss of traction !!!!!!!!. _________________ Darren Colbert

no normally we run in 2wd and on harder surfaces it allows an easier slide to bring the heavier bikes around tight corners we trialled at kamfari 2 years ago and works like a charm also reduces stress on drive train unless you have fracture in tailshaft (Tintanara) Lol _________________ Darren Colbert

I have used both but perfer the 22x8x10 i find them much easier to ride with less effort is needed to ride with them and they wear very well i have had up to 1900 klms out of them and still competitve with them at that mileage , I find they hook very well in deep sand and on hard pack.
By the way i think people that ride irs quads are GAY |

I have had both on my IRS over the last few years ( not at the same time )
and i can 100% confirm there in no difference in , traction , high speed stability , clearance , suspension , puncture resistance . When you bike is parked in the shed , as is mine .
But i prefer the 22/8x10 kenda , used them at Condo (2010)on a ds450 , had no problems with traction , was more confident both going into rough stuff ( clearance ) and on the high speed sections (stability) . I had only had about 2 hrs on the bike prior , coming from my irs so for me it was about confidence over actual performance . |
