Hi Guys

Im relatively new to bike set up and need some advice on the set up of my polaris 525 that Im taking in this years Australsian Safari Adventure Tour

The bike is a bog standard polaris 525 irs with factory nerf bars and fox remote shocks all round

The tour isnt the full race its only covers part of the course

Ive done the Safari 3 times in my own race car and helped last year as a CRO and been involved in desert racing for years.

This year Ive decided to run in the tour on my quad

Im thinking things to look at are

Generic indicators, horn set up
Aftermarket bars say flex bar or similair
Barkbusters
Steering damper
Oil cooiling, maybe PWR raditator with in tank oil cooler
Long range fuel tank IMS or similair
Uni filter
Shock covers
Large rear grab bar to strap stuff down
Gearing tyre/ wheel sizes

Any comments advice from those who have done it or helped preped bikes would be greatly apreciated remember this is a set up for the tour not the race

Cheers

Dave

Hi Dave. You will have a ball mate. I dont know much about the Polaris but your main prob will be flat tires. Make sure you have a great repair kit and good tires. I recommend you run Kenda Parker dt tires front and rear.

Gidday Dave,

Try www.ballards.cc for some blinkers and stuff. I know they are 2 wheeled people who we used to use before changing to 4 wheels but have an assortment of aftermarket lights and things on hand for people to convert MX bikes etc.

Dave, If you do all the stuff on your list you will be pretty well sorted, Like Smithy said though make sure you can acrry enough tyre repair stuff and take a couple of spares. The Polaris in particular proably doesn't need a bigger radiator for running in the tour (you would for the race though)

I will be very surprised if you get road rego for a quad.

I met two fellas last week who are quadriplegics who got rego on quads and it was very difficult.

The quad must be registered for the Safari........Octagon have a deal with the WA gov and quad competitors get a magic piece of paper to wave at police, just ask Mags or Smitty.

i was in contact with the organisers of the tour earlier this year and they were looking into getting quads into it. must have worked out for them. it is possible to get a "b" rego for quads in wa which allows them to be ridden on the roads for approved competitions which must be the angle they are going with

Also know as an event permit..... As long as it is ridden as part of the event.

In 09 we finished Safari at Kalgoorlie, some 600km from Perth. Joseph and crew rode their quads back to Perth from Kal! Still part of the event.... sort of.... anyway, they recon it was good for more km on the quads as part of Dakar training.

This is not rego or ADR compliance, it is an event permit.

I cant talk for other states but as heath would know we just needed a (WA) over 48hr permit for offroad vehicles for the Quit forest rally to liase to stages on the open highways

Pretty easy to get for event purposes which i guess this would be classed as an event ?
