In WA we just had our first state round and the noise tester caused quite a bit of drama.
I sort of went off my nut at the CEO of MWA about how much time and effort had gone into promoting state round for quads, filling the grids etc etc... and this rude man was sending people off to replace their pipes or go home. Without going into it further, apparently he will be at every state round and open this year, with exclusion orders for anyone over 102, with no warnings...

I was wondering in other states whether you are also being put under this scrutiny as we have been told the rationale behind this is..
2 more MX tracks in the east have been closed due to noise.

First time I have heard of a DB tester used at a Quad event, but I guess it is just simple progress and enforcing of the rules. Some warning would have been nice though. How many were sent home and which brands of aftermarket pipes were the worst offenders?
Really I guess the best thing would be some kind of indication from pipe manufacturers of DB output. I know this would vary with different cams etc, but at least it would give an indication. Fact is, we don't want to see tracks close down.

we have them at most big events here in qld.
to have them at a club round is rare, but at the supermoto state rounds and our own mx state championship, you have to be aware that they could turn up at anytime.
in qld it is drummed into us, so if your caught its just bad luck.
unfortunately its part of our sport, just like fuel testing and drug testing etc etc

People travelling east are saying its done differently over there.

Ok, there is a standard way to test for sound emisions and it should be stated in the MA rule book. I am sorry, I have not had time to have a look yet but I am sure it is in there. Just a sugestion, if competitors are unsure if there machine is noise legal, perhaps a day can be set up where an MA official can come and test a group for noise before a race meeting. Just a sugestion.

Yep theres a page in the GCR's on "How to" but when someone rang MA about the format for testing and procedure that is to be followed step by step,
ie... "rev it til it vibrates" doesnt sound legal to us...
MA said there wasnt a standards or procedure manual, just what was in the GCR's.

The same goes with drugs and alcohol at MA events, they can turn up at any MA sanctioned event and randomly test riders. This happened at a SX run in SA and interestingly 6 or so riders suddenly had major bike troubles, withdrew and went home. If you have a positive reading for Drugs or Alcohol I think they can take ur licence away for 12 months or more.

It would be good for the clubs/SCB to organise a Noise test day so people don't get turned away at events. Certainly going to look into the dB rating on any pipes I buy in the future.

I've been waiting for this to happen here properly, it has once but the noise testers didn't send any one home.

The problem with the procedure is that that it is pretty vauge in the CGR's as to how to do it with MX bikes, as in how to measure revs while your doing it. Unless the noise rules are clarified then no one should be knocked back.

Note for 2007 GCRs

From 1st Jan 2008. the noise emission limit in GCR rule 12.10.1.1 shall be 96 db(A)

96db don't sound like much. Many std machines would struggle with that I would imagine. You're right though, procedure NEEDS to be clarified.

The GCR`s are quite specific about how the engine speed must be tested(12.10.2.4) the MA ammendement 1 of 6/2/2007 is also very specific about the proceedure (12.10.2.1) and engine speeds, it must also be noted that rule (12.10.2..8) is very much the governing rule re: noise and it should read rule 12.10.1 not 12.8.1 which relates to streamlining

Yes specific about the procedure except on the prescribed revs chart in the GCR book where is clearly states at the top of the sheet "Except Motocross" with no further explanation. I havent got the amendment can you send it to me Hugh?

Hey Pete. If you ref to the MX section, it states 4000 rpm for 500cc machines etc. At the moment 102 db but 2008, 96 db. BIG DIFFERENCE!

here's the official MA ammendment.

Important noise level rule changes (added 9/02/07)

At the November 2006 Motorcycling Australia Board meeting, it was resolved to retain the 102db(A) noise emission level for 2007.

This decision was not correctly reflected in the 2007 Manual of Motorcycle Sport (GCR 12.10).

For clarity, GCRs 12.10.2.1 to 12.10.2.8 and GCRs 17.3 and 17.3.0.1 are to be deleted and replaced with new wording which can be viewed by clicking on the link at the bottom of this page
