On road registering ATV's will totally circumvent the whole off road/rec rego debacle. Lets fact it, states cannot even agree on a national ciriculum for our friggin kids, how the hell are we ever going to get a workable rec rego going in this country. I'm sorry but it aint going to happen.

As for the on road mayhem comments, possibly there would be some initially. But once governments start weilding their draconian hools laws, quad riders will end up just like any other road user. Taxed into submission. I honestly don't know why they haven't allowed it already. They could make a fortune.

I'm with Mick, I would give my lefty for the ability to ride my quad down to the nearest off road riding area. I would go so far as to vote for one nation if it mean that we could register our quads.

You know guys we are a community, we can get together and hit up our respective transport ministers with an email campaign. I know in WA Troy Buswell could use this topic as a nice diversion right about now.

No point talking to Troy Buswell, I don't think anyone is taking him seriously at the moment.

Yeah it would be nice to able to ride out to Metro Rd, stop for fuel on the way and then stop for fuel on the way home. But as someone stated above, the media would be all over the first fatal accident involving a quad and that's the kind of publicity we don't need. Even trail bike riders are getting a hammering in a few shires.

Too many (sausage) heads riding on private property and such.

As "Off-road Recreation Vehicle" community, we're probably our own worse enemy.
( The media have done a terrific job on linking ATV's as part of a banner headline with illegal/death/maimed/children in the rest of it. )
We tend to ride in small groups, and keep to ourselves while trying to have fun and keep under the radar of the fun police.
As such, we are pretty easy pickings for the media, who barely answer to anyone and easily ignored by our governments, who have nothing to fear because we are not organised like the shooters had to become to save their sport.
And, just like the shooters, the people trying to be responsible get caned for others actions.
I only found out last week that rec rego and training is on MA's national agenda. Short of bodies to do the work apparently, so nothing doing there.
And there is a National body of manufacturers starting to do the leg work, so nearly 30 years after quads were introduced, the ball might be starting to roll..........

I just wondered if those who have the most to gain (motorcycle dealers/importers/distributors) are involved to any degree to push rec rego and or trailbike parks??

i was in the DPI in Joondalup WA gettin ORV rego a few weeks ago and asked the question as to why we couldnt rego for road(with the exception of tractor rego between properties). Lady behind counter was very helpful and she showed me an internal flier they received from the company that issues the 3rd party with your car rego/drivers licence. I think it was the Australian Insurance Commission. Stated that due to the vehicle being classed an ORV they were therefore unable to have 3rd party insurance issued which means DPI wont register it.
Sucks but that life

Different states, different problems. In Qld, for quads and trikes, we get a very limiting Conditional rego costing some $212, of which about $80 is for rego and the rest is CTP. ( Compulsory Third Party ). Evil or Very Mad
Tassie's rec and conditional rego is about the same @ about $326, and while they have a ride on lawn-mower speed limit, they do have a limited road access to and between some riding areas. Cool
I reckon ozquad 44 is on the money about the states and national curriculums, 20+ years of talking about interstate heavy transport
and it's a long way from uniform.

The problem with the QLD conditional rego, is that you need the land owners permission. I.E. You can buy all the QLD conditional rego you want, but don't bother riding into any state owned land because you don't have permission. Get caught or have an accident and bye bye TPI.

The only reason that QLD have got conditioanl rego is so Police, Rangers, Lawn contractors, Council organisation etc.. etc.. can use their quads/tractors to cross roads and car-parks etc to do work. It has nothing to do with recreation. (clearly its used for proper organised enduro type events, but again its up to the land owner and that is the crux of the whole deal in QLD. Even proper event organisers jump through a lot of hoops to get these things up and running). So in effect the third party insurer has a very nice out clause, just like the clause that the NSW boys are faced with at stockton.

In stockton if you don't have indicators, brake lights, mirrors etc... no TPI. So they are charging 99% of all ATV riders $$ for TPI which they will never ever have to fork out on. QLD, and NSW are as bad as each other.

About the only way I can thing that Rego thing will be sorted is if a manufacturer steps up to the plate and makes a fully road compliant Quad, and jumps through all the hoops for the various transport bodies. I suppose you could go out and buy a Can-AM spyer the get an engineer to sign off on throwing an axle in the back of one, then attempt to get it over the pits. bit to close to failure I think.

I have see a disabled bloke on a fully registerd quad so it can be done. I always said I would give my leftie for a road registered quad. Surely that counts as a disability.

Still waiting for bits from the states, cosmic quads c'mon already!

Way off yet, I'm hoping for the bits to come in before easter so I can spend a few days sticking it all back together.

Certainly room for improvement, by all our tea room tyrants.
