Does anyone use the just above the ankle height boots ?
It is time for new boots for me and the guy in the shop showed me those short Fox Comp 5, I think, boots and I found them very comfortable.
Would the Finke scrutineers pass those?

Another question: Do you use knee protectors?

Have used mine for the last 2 years and really enjoy them; again I only trail ride but think the local club enforces motox boots for their enduros and motox rounds for quad riders.

I still wear the motox boots occasionally when out in some knarly stick country to protect my shins.

Hi Jimmy,

This was discussed amongst the quad committee and it seems you could get i exhaust burns on some exhausts, also less protection in general so to play it safe it was voted against .

thats what i would have thought. since i bought my first boots ive always worn the long ones. i just dont feel as safe in the shortys. never come close to hurting my ankle on a quad yet so dont know how they would actually compare but i figure its better to be safe than sorry

If I had the short ones I would have a burnt right calf instead of just burnt pants after my first ride with a new slip on (HMF) on the Raptor. Very relieved I didn't burn my new SIDI boots.

Same happened on the KFX400 with the new slip on (T4)

I do have knee guards but I only wear them on a two wheeler, along with elbow guards, cos I tend to fall off a lot. It takes so long to gear up for a ride on a two wheeler I'm glad I only do it 2 or 3 times a year.

what are you guys on about ankles, the shortys cover the ankles!!!
They dont cover your shins. i wear long knee pads and i feel great.

I cant wear the long boots so if i have to wear thhem well fine i wont ride. Thats one entry and money you wont get

You have to sign your life away b4 you ride an enduro anyway dont you so whats the problem?

Too many people voting ? Just to make things difficult if you ask me

put your voting towards more events instead of sissy discussions like this!

sorry this is the way i speak sorry if i offend Smile

hey im not saying that everyone should HAVE to wear long boots to do enduros. just thats the way i feel personally about it. i think its up to each person to work out how much protection they should be wearing and what their own life is worth.

the longer boots give more ankle protection than shortys as they use the strength and stability of the shin/lower leg to help support the ankle.

im pretty sure the disclaimers before the ride arent worth the paper theyre written on. but to be honest i dont think one rider not participating because they only want to wear shorty boots would affect the event organisers considering how popular most of the bigger events (like finke) are.

dont know what youre talking about with the voting though

@chev: just reread above. see what you mean now. for enduros it depends on whose running them and where. ive done some small country town ones where they dont really care. its only at the bigger ones like gas dash/finke etc that they actually check things like that

I love my short boots! I have read the gcr's and in my opinion short boots meet the standard. Main part is strong construction, sole and pants must tuck into the boots.

Certainly hope I can wear them for thumbpump and finke!

The guy above actually quoted the NQAC discussion a bit wrong.

The MA rule for boots used in Quad RACING events under an MA permit is that the boot must comply to the GCR for that discipline.
For Enduro and Reliability Trials that is 25.1.3.1
For MX it is the same, and detailed in 17.1.3.1
both say cover 3/4 of the lower leg.

Some members asked MA last year about running shorter boots.
The NQAC did not vote against any different boot options, but did discuss this point and agree that more research and investigation should be carried out in the following year before they make any recommendation on changes to the existing rule.
So this aspect of the rule is unchanged for 2011.

You are correct, however when it was discussed and some NQAC members had hands up and down for various reasons.
The safety aspect was discussed at length, therefore it was recommended by the NQAC not to change the current rule until further research .
A round about way of saying it was voted against but we will have another crack next year. Wink
