Well I took the job for Macedon knowing that it was a 3 month commitment overall and about 4 weeks hard work. Now thats over I dont intend I will go on as representing the seat of Macedon and in-fact I hope we have unearthed a very good local candidate. So thats taken care of.

Pre the election when asked to be a candidate I was given a set of policies to agrre in principle with, I did generally on most and went further on some and gavew them some new ones.

CA were already calling for a new registration classification so I added ATV's in general to that.

CA had 3 policies that fell across fire and its aspects and I put access to firetrails for recreational ATV's over that.

CA generally were formed on the basis of looking after several key groups of people, farmers, the country in general and the people who take their recreation in the country. I added on that the addition of State run or leased ride trails for ATV's.

These points were not objected although too late to be put into "policies" to be run on the CA ticket during the election.

Now my own personal undertaking is to follow up those additions or inclusions in policies, I do want to see the words and thats what I'll argue for as a CA member.

Other than that I have volunteered my time to help the CA secretary write their strategy document for moving forward for the next four years so I'll see whether that includes the policy review in that as well.

Thanks peeps for the encouragement and the thanks because it is good to be appreciated. We'll see if its not going to do us some good or not.

I'm really hopeful on the point of the registration issue coz if they are going to change one its sooo easy to put the other in there.

Well I think it is but I am overly enthusiastic! Very Happy

The latest update from the CA secretary... we want those upper house seats!!
___________________________________________________________

A key person from the SSAA asked me to provide him with an update on where the election result is for Country Alliance – so I thought I’d spread this around mainly for the benefit of our sponsors but also anybody interested in where things are at.

This is the story so far as I see it .....

Lower House.

Country Alliance is averaging just over 4% in the seats it is running in. It has done exceptionally well in Shepparton with a primary vote of 21% although the seat has been won by the Nationals. In some other seats, also in the north, it has polled close to or over 10%. There are a couple of seats where Country Alliance has determined the outcomes.

More thorough analysis will be carried out this week, however these numbers are great for a party that didn’t even run in the lower house at the last state election – and where most candidates only came on board in the final days before nominations closed.

Upper house.

There has been media speculation that Country Alliance has won at least one upper house spot. I’d love to believe it, but that story is incorrect. Unlike the lower house, it is not possible to claim anything until all the upper house votes have been counted.

This is because the preference flows for the upper house are very sensitive to the inclusion of just 50 or 100 votes in the distribution process, particularly for parties that might (otherwise) be excluded early on in the count.

However, Country Alliance has done very well in the upper house in the north where it is level-pegging with the Greens. There is a chance we might poll them once the pre-poll votes are in because we know that we had strong voting interest at the early voting centres.

The problem is that we might have done too well in trying to keep the Greens vote down. This is because if they are kicked out in the contest for the final seat in each regions (with us in the running), their preferences will exclude us, handing the ‘final’ upper house seats most likely to Labor.

Believe it or not, we actually need the Green vote to increase for our people to get elected. This is because the fight would then be between us and the Greens – and we’d win in one or two regions on the back of major party preferences.

Yes, it’s complicated. However I simply urge people to ignore media speculation and wait for the final result to come out probably next week. To do otherwise will be to build up false hopes.

Summary

CA has done well. We polled well in the lower house and might outpoll the Greens across northern Victoria.

The worst case scenario is that we don’t get anybody up in the upper house. However if we don’t, it’ll most likely mean we beat the Greens. An “even money” scenario is that we get someone up but I could not tell you if that would be in the northern, eastern or western areas. Obviously getting more than one of our own up, that would send us into orbit.

A great thing that has come out of this is that every candidate I have spoken to feels great about their contribution – and many of them have already indicated they want to run for us again. With the next election four years off, this is a great start for that campaign.

Let’s just see how the upper house count unfolds over the next few days.....

I Thought I would share this message from the CA Pres, well just the bit about whether we will get seats or not.

___________________________________________________________

Russel Bate says:

"Many of you are now wondering when we will know the outcome of the Upper House elections. With daily announcements by the various media that suggest that we have or have not won a seat or seats the situation is becoming even more confusing.

To assist you all to answer the questions that you have, and that others are asking you, here are the facts.
the seats in the Legislative Council election are still not decided
the way in which the LC is determined is via a complex serious of preference flows
these generally take up to two weeks to conclude as the VEC has to count and allocate all preferences
as primary votes and preferences are allocated the VEC looks for those candidates who have achieved 16.66% of the total vote (a quota)
when candidates achieve a quota any further votes they receive are then passed on to the candidate nominated in their preferences
as these preferences are are allocated further candidates will achieve a quota and be elected
their surplus is then allocated as per the original preference of that candidate
and so on and so on.

Hopefully you now understand why this takes so much time. At this time we do not know whether any of our upper house candidates has or will achieve a quota. Our best chance on current figures is Steve Threlfall, then Andrew Jones and then Miles Hodge; however even this could change.

Our current positions are
Northern Region - 6.99% of total votes (24259 first preference votes) .42% of a quota (83.55% of votes counted)
Eastern Region - 3.11%, (11734 votes), .19% of a quota, 85.28% counted
Western region - 2.64%, (10015 votes), .16 of a quota, 84.15% counted
Withe second preference flows from the ALP, Coalition and DLP in the North and East, the Coalition and DLP in the West and the Sex Party in the North we stand a very good chance of picking up substantial preference flows......"

So thats where CA currently stands.

As promised the Party Secretary has already been in touch with me regarding the review of the party so I remain embedded for the moment and influencing the party so I am hopeful of getting ATV' in our request for reg.

Cheers

Gavin
