 |
|
I want to install an auxiliary socket into my race trailer to run a water pump and other accessories. Can I run the wiring from the 7 pin trailer plug or do I have to connect to the car battery direct. A mate recommended hooking into the white (return earth) and blue (auxiliary) wires in the trailer plug but this didn't do diddly squat. Any tips appreciated. _________________ I'm not suffering from insanity, I'm enjoying it!!! |

run it straight from your auxillary battery in your car... you do have a auxillary battery dont you. ?? use anderson plugs from the trailer draw bar to the car, if that makes sense. _________________ 2005 KFX700

No I dont have an auxiliary battery. Is there an easy way to hook the plug up without running a second battery? _________________ I'm not suffering from insanity, I'm enjoying it!!! |

sure is, you scab... you either going to run it through your ignition or just wire diect to your battery, but dont let the battery run down to far or you wont be able to start it. _________________ 2005 KFX700

It's the scottish blood in me...and we prefer the term thrifty thankyou very much. So there is no way I can hook into the 7 pin trailer plug for power? _________________ I'm not suffering from insanity, I'm enjoying it!!! |

no, its not going to run all you want, you'll need at least some 5mm wire (about 50amp I think ) to get the power to the back of the trailer. The longer the wire you run the more volatage drop you will encounter. So Mc tightwad spend some cash. _________________ 2005 KFX700

Does your trailer have trailer brakes and a brake controller under the dash? If it does the blue wire (pin #5 on the plug) is power to the brakes and that will only give you power when you hit the brakes. If you don't have trailer brakes and there is a blue wire you can use it as an aux power source. Trace the blue back and see where it goes. If it is a blue inside seven core insulated wiring that has been used don't be suprised if it is cut and does not enter the plug. I am assuming that it is a seven pin round plug where on most trailer applications pin 5 and pin 2 are not used. If you have electric brakes the only way to go is an anderson plug as Yogie said. If you have the blue floating around unused it can be utilised BUT It will only be 3mm inside the sheathing and should only be used on appliances with very low amp draw.
So in short run a 6 mm wire fused at your battery to and Anderson plug and you could run the lights at the MCG _________________ I am old and wise because i survived young and stupid |

Thanks for the help Clarkie. I had to run an auxiliary wire from my battery to the trailer plug on my car as it didn't have one. Then it was just a matter of wiring the auxiliary socket through the plug on my trailer and Robert is my dad's brother. I now have a water tank and pump installed in the trailer to run a portable shower. _________________ I'm not suffering from insanity, I'm enjoying it!!! |

Did you put a fuse in the system at the battery? _________________ Has turned to the Dark Side! |

Sure did. The pump only draws 3.5 amps so I didn't have to go over the top with anything too heavy, just an inline fuse. _________________ I'm not suffering from insanity, I'm enjoying it!!! |
