Below is from the local rag.
The headline.......
COLLISION COURSE
Police blitz on tracks
************************
POLICE and trail bike riders
are on a collision course over
the use of state forest tracks
north of Caboolture.
The Moreton Bay Forensic Crash
Unit has warned it will target unregistered
bikes and unlicensed riders in
the Beerburrum State Forest leading
up to Christmas.
It follows an accident near Elimbah
on August 15 that left a 43-year-old
Beenleigh man fighting for his life.
The man, who had a 16-year-old
female passenger on his trail bike,
suffered serious chest and internal
injuries when he collided with a quad
bike ridden by a 16-year-old male on
Bishops Rd.
It took to eight the number of lifethreatening
injuries caused by trail
bike accidents in the Beerburrum
State Forest since 2005.
Four people, all males, have been
killed in the same time period.
Moreton Bay Forensic Crash Unit
officer in charge Sergeant Greg Price
said up to 1000 trail bike riders used
the Beerburrum forest at weekends.
Sgt Price, who encouraged riders to
use the area but to do so legally and
safely, said there would be a greater
presence of police and the Queensland
Parks and Forest Service officers in
the hope of reducing serious accidents.
‘‘We’ve had cases were an ambulance
crew can take up to 45 minutes to find
someone because of the number of
trails in the forest,’’ Sgt Price said.
Police urge riders to travel in pairs
or carry an emergency positioning
indicating radio beacon (EPIRB).
Riders have blamed the lack of dedicated
trail bike facilities for the saturation
of riders in state forests.
The owner of Gear Factor in Brendale,
Donna Ogle, said local riders
found it tough to travel to the nearest
facility two hours away at Gatton.
Caboolture Classic and Vintage
Speedway Association president John
Fry encouraged riders to join a club
or association.
Mr Fry runs weekly meetings at the
Caboolture Showgrounds for trail bike
riders aged up to 16.
‘‘We don’t hold any races here but we
just want to give the kids somewhere
safe and supervised to ride, because
they don’t really have anywhere else,’’
he said.
Those injured in the crash on August
15 are now all in a stable condition.
