hey guys,
Just started getting into the whole ATV world and i am loving what i've seen and experienced so far! looking at getting my own bike soon but weighing up all my options first.
I had a quick search of the forum and didnt find anything but if anyone knows of this type of thread please feel free to redirect me! any way to my query.
Is there a lot more cost in running a MX 450, say a yfz450 compared to a 400 say a trx400ex?
I wont be doing any racing, flat or mx just mainly burning it up on the beach, rivers and light trail stuff in Nth Qld.
No doubt with work and other commitments the bike may stay parked up in the shed for a month or two between rides, would both bikes be right to be taken straight down the beach for a run or would the 450 need a bit more tlc for taking it for a strap?
Over a year would the 400 be an easier and cheaper bike to run or would it only be slightly harder on the bank balance to own and repair a 450?
Any opinions would be greatly appreciated! thanks! |

For someone like me, no. I am @nal about servicing and do most things myself. The 400 wouldn't cost me anymore than a 450. I clean air filter & change oil after every ride (I don't ride that often). I check my valves every ~20 hours. If you were going off the book service intervals and paid a mechanic to do it, yes a 400 would come off cheaper.
Unlike some people on here, I don't consider ATV'ing that expensive a sport. Apart from the initial cost of the quad, if you do your own basic maintanance, it's not going to make you go broke.
If you get lazy and not keep up on servicing the YFZ450, it won't be as forgiving as a TRX400. Then a 450 can be rather expensive! _________________ Don't close your eyes during the crash, you'll miss the best part |

450's are basically built to be raced hard and rebuilt often.
The TRX400EX was made for trail/enduro riding with reliability in mind. It's what others have tried to copy for ten years.
In standard form the LTZ/KFX 400 is a tiny bit quicker and more modern looking but the Honda is lighter, sits lower, and handles better, even with it's basic shocks.

some ppl wont agree with me here....i own an 04 trx450r..some ppl hate these bikes 4 a number of reasons but i cant fault it. It is a "race bred" but i used it 4 trail riding only. my 04 has the kick start which some hate but i love it because i usually only ride during the wetter months (winter) so 4 me the kick start is great because i can ride it every weekend 4 3 months then put in the shed & let it sit until the next winter so no battery issues, as mentioned like others i clean air filter after every ride, change oil's after every 3rd ride & had valves checked, other than that it gets a regular check fluid checks, have a good look over 2 make sure everything is tight & working as it should..its been a bullet proof bike 4 me & it handles the trails with ease _________________ 04 TRX 450r
