each pair of gears for each gear ratio are already meshed together, dog clutches are then used to engage/disengage each ratio from the output shaft. That's the basic version I'm sure others will correct me laughing laughing

Rolls eyes

This is from wikipedia

In a constant mesh gearbox, the transmission gears are always in mesh and rotating, but the gears are not rigidly connected to the shafts on which they rotate. Instead, the gears can freely rotate or be locked to the shaft on which they are carried. The locking mechanism for any individual gear consists of a collar (or "dog collar") on the shaft which is able to slide sideways so that teeth (or "dogs") on its inner surface bridge two circular rings with teeth on their outer circumference: one attached to the gear, one to the shaft (one collar typically serves for two gears; sliding in one direction selects one transmission speed, in the other direction selects the other). When the rings are bridged by the collar, that particular gear is rotationally locked to the shaft and determines the output speed of the transmission.

im only asking because i was talking 2 a mate the other day & he was commenting on its constant mesh box (from what he read about the make/model) & he went on2 say that i could shift gears without using the clutch as long as the rev's werent 2 high (eg 1/4 throttle was ok) of course not knowing if he was right or wrong i didnt say anything so i just wanted 2 find out the facts...think ill stick with the clutch, its there i might as well use it...thanx 4 the input boys & girls

The most important thing is taking off the 'load' when you change gears.
The clutch does this real well Smile
The gears are always engaged as said, and they are also still moving, but with little effort.
Changing gears in the air is another good way that has other in race advantages too.

From what your mate said...
IMO a touch of thottle going down gears and back right of when snapping up gears.

I know people who say, allways use the clutch...
And others that say they never use it (only for taking off).

Up to you, your timing and how the gearbox feels eek
