State Round 6 had all the markings of being the best racing all year, and judging by the first race, we were all in for a treat.
Anthony Yewers and Graham Terry were locked on equal Top points coming into the last round so expectations were running high, it was like Honda V Yamaha and Country V City or Goldfields V AJS.
But at the end of the day only one rider would be wearing the number 1 plate.
Race 1 saw Glenn Ashworth(3 times state champion) set the pace with Ant in pursuit, Glenn just motored away and the race was now between ANT and Chad McKay followed by Graham Terry. Covering the 6 or 7 laps at full throttle there was never more than 2 bike lengths between the group, towards the half way mark Colin Jefferies tacked onto the end of the bunch and Chad made his way past ANT putting the title contenders just one position apart. The racing was fierce and the 400+ strong crowd were gasping at some of the manoeuvres through the whoops. Meanwhile back in 5th was Tom Stevens {intermediate} coming off a win the previous week at Jindong, he was up for the challenge, Brett Yewers was on his tail and fantastic tussle was on for 5 laps. Back at the front of the pack the last lap board appeared and it was now or never, every opportunity and every door was closed for passing and it would take a huge gamble to try and get past. Ashworth by this time was driving back down the pit shoot taking 1st with Mckay already in 2nd, the fight was on for 3rd 4th and 5th, the group bunched up going along road side and into the final corner with Ant missing a gear and GT taking the high side of the berm and shooting off in front only to be followed through by Colin Jefferies into 4th with Ant Yewers relegated to 5th. The pits were a buzz, it was the best Quad race WA had ever seen. Brett Yewers came in 6th with Tommy having overshot a berm relegating him to the back of the field.
The Clubman crew had simulars goals with Clint Hill and Corey Stratton going into the last round just one point apart, with 16 riders out there and the bank around the whoop section lined with spectators, the cheers went up as the whole contingent made it safely through and under the bridge. One thing Ive never heard before that I heard yesterday was clang of nerf bars, unbelievably fast and close racing !
Looking for leaders I couldn’t believe my eyes, theres Clint and Corey both stopped on the track, both throwing their hands in the air not being able to restart their bikes, didn’t see the collision but was told Clint had spun out, and Corey came around hit the stationary bike across the track, unfortunately Coreys bike couldn’t be started and was pushed off the track in disgust, Clint got his going and tacked on the back of the field almost a lap down for minimal points.
Overall Resuls for the series 1st Clint Hill 2nd Corey Stratton 3rd Michael Harcout
Race 2 For the Pro/intermediates - GT 1st Chad 2nd with Ant 3rd putting Graham Terry now 9 points in front for the Championship, but…. There was still one race to go and everything was not going to run to plan with young Tom flipping his Quad in the second corner and Graham negotiating his way stalled the Quad and took off in second last place, Ant was off over the bridge by now and the race was on. GT needed to pass quite a few riders to keep him in the running which seemed to happen easily until he caught up to the Polaris Rider Kevin Fanning, notoriously hard to pass GT sat behind Kevin for a few laps until negotiating the pass, Ant was up in 3rd not able to make any Ground on Mckay and Ashworth. The race drew to a close with the finale layed out written on the pit board #11 hold your position and you have it. Graham Terry came over the finish line to the applause of the crowd and the presentation dais and interview, the champagne corks popping and relief at his first ever State Round Title 6 years in the making ! Ant Yewers took 2nd with Colin Jefferies taking a very creditable 3rd place. _________________ www.waquadmx.com |

Congrats to GT, about time he won a state title, he sounded pretty happy with himself when I spoke to him last night. _________________
