i started with a standard 2005 Trx 400 ex. i fabricated a custom set of tuned length header very short! out of 3mm steam pipe 1 1/4 inch diameter. Mounted a garrett GT1241 turbocharger on the front of the engine between the motor and the oil tank. Oil feed comes from the centre of the oil filter housing and return back to the motor the a drain pipe fitted in the magneto case. hand made exhaust 1 3/4 pipe with a hot dog muffler. hand made intake pipe (no intercooler as yet) up to the carby. the original air box now houses the blow off valve, 10 psi fuel pump, and malpassi rising rate regulator. dropped a couple of jet sizes in the carby and set the boost to 7 psi. now the thing that lets you use the carby is a pilot tube which is a small tube in the outlet pipe from the turbocharger the pilot tube must!!! be fitted facing down in to the turbo pressured air. the pilot tube is then fitted to all reference lines fitted to the
carby to equilize the pressure in the carby. any other questions you would like to know feel free to ask. sorry i have no picture as yet |

that is awesome!
so basically that "pilot tube" pressurises the float bowl? is that right?
is the rest of the motor stock?
what does it go like against other quads, eg banshees etc?
good work mate! _________________ 2002 SE Banshee |

Great stuff.
I have a mate who wanted to do exactly this years ago.
Lot's can probably say that... but you've gone and done it.
Well done.
I'd be keen to see how the carby works.
Does the boost pressure try to hold the slide up?
Do you boost reference the top of the slide as well as the bowl etc?
My mate thought to put the whole carby in a pressurised box...
But like I said... you've done it
When are you selling the kits _________________ Can-Am X Team

The problem with a pressurized box is trying to mount it in such a small spot and sealing it
all the loose hoses of the carby are connected to the pilot tube
the carby receives 3 psi fuel pressure at idle and as the boost rises so does the fuel pressure if boost pressure exceeds fuel pressure it runs the float bowl dry
the problem i had was the original main jet #148 was to big and everytime you hit the throttle to hard or even worked the throttle it would flood
it now runs a #138 main jet
i also removed the choke to get better air flow through the carby
the blow off valve stops boost from keeping the slide up
as for kits i almost lost my mind building this one
it took 6 months of trial and error more error than success |

There are a heap of little cars in Japan that run turbos ideally sized for Quads.
They have a small car rego class over there, I think they are called K class cars and they have a max displacement of 660cc.
The old (i think pre 1998) limit was 550cc.
Many of the turbo units are built into manifolds etc, but there are plenty of seperate units too.
Superchargers also.
Are we going to see a wave of turbo quads around ?
I can already smell a few boots melting on exhaust pipes _________________ Can-Am X Team

one other thing is i have to run a 105 octane fuel |

If you are already running 105 to prevent detonation, cranking the boost up would be a brave move wouldn't it.
Crank it down 1 psi and be safe, and it will last longer too.
Does it have a nice turbo note and turbo whistle.
that would be the coolest.
Being overtaken by a 400EX and hearing it dump as it snatches another gear going past.
Good work. _________________ Can-Am X Team

I was going to make a dry ice intercooler but i can't get any dry ice in west aus
a did pick up a holley blue fuel pump and boost controller this week
i might try ice packs around the inlet pipe and turn the boost up to 12
this setup is only for dragging i'll still run it at seven psi for bush and beach work |
