Folks I have just bought a Banshee for beach use I have owned 4 stroke quads previousley and find the Banshee fun to ride on the dunes. A question I have is my Banshee does not seem to be able to pull top gear I looked in the manual and it appears that 6 gear is higher than 1 to 1. I put a 13 tooth font sproket on it, it still runs 41 rear it pulls better down low but still has a problem holding 6 flat out it just bogs is this normal. The quad is in good condition 06 model with approx 15 hours on it. It runs Toomey T5 and K&N filter with 280 jetting I mix Shell oil at 30 to 1 and run Maxis paddles. I also beleive even though I am new to 2 strokes it should have more grunt down low.
Can you boys help or is this normal it starts well and appears to run fine with out missing a beat. I generally thought it would be faster in a straight line than a stock 700 raptor but I get beat by about 3 to 4 bike lengths.

do a compression test on it

i havent ridden in dunes but it should pull 13/41 no worries? standard is 14/41 and i have mine geared to 15/41 for flat track etc, and it only has pipes filter etc... but yeah i reckon it would struggle big time in the dunes with that gearing

maybe your paddles are too big?

4 Stroker, so you reakon the gearing is to high if I am running 13 x 41 (14 x 41 is standard) what do you suggest something like 13x45 or even higher in the rear. You can get front sprokets for Banshee's from 10 to 16 but if you go much smaller on the front thay dont last long and thay start spitting teeth.

your gearing is lower than standard...

smaller on the front means more acceleration, less top end, bigger on the rear is the same

so yeah i reckon it is down on power if it cant pull that gearing

find someone with good brand compression tester and report back with what it is! it might just need a set of rings if it is low and this would restore your lost bottom end too...

just noticed the bit about you getting beaten by a raptor...

that scenario is the norm on any aurface except bitumen, even then you will probably only just keep up

raptors have about 45hp out of the box your banshee with just pipes and filter will prolly only have about 42.

if it needs a re-ring get the head shaved 25thou while your at it and get an adustable timing plate to advance your timing 4 degrees.

it wont add much to the top end but it will feel like a different bike with heaps more bottom and mid range, which is what you really want!

make sure you find a mechanic with a properly calibrated "snap on" compression tester or equivalent quality

me and my mate both have $50 compression testers and they read 40psi different to each other!

maybe a plug check may be a go aswell

make sure its not running too rich

do you run the lid on the airbox?

4 stoker, I dont run with the air box lid, I will get a compression tester tonight and check the plugs and the compresion what type of compression should I be lookin at.

what type of compression tester or how much compression should you have?

type: most expensive/ most recently calibrated one you can find

compression: 125-135 psi is what a brand new standard bike should test at

anything below 120 you will start to notice loss in power and need to rebuild

you wont be rich with 280s and no lid.... it is most likely spot on but if anything it will be lean, so do a plug chop anyway

Sold 4 stroke, PM me with your bank account details. My mate owns a bike shop he is going to do a plug check and compression test on it and he has all the mod con tools and knows this motor backwards. As for milling the head how much does that usually cost.

shouldnt cost too much, i think my mechanic charged me $30??

anyone with a milling machine can do it, just dont take off more than 25 thou

hi mate im running 310 main jets with 30 pilot jets (tommey t6 boysen reeds boost bottle k and n wiseco pistons) I reacon you jetting is letting you down on you topend go to a 300 main and do a plug chop and see what colour you plugs are they should be a light brown ring on them about 2mm thick if you jetting is right or close to it

Thanks 2 stroke my mate seems to think the same thing It has done little work so I beleive the compression should be ok we are doing a test and plug chop on it next week. I am going to do the same mods to my banshee as you have whats your rig go like.

Hey 2 stroke if I have to rebuild the top end I was looking at a forged piston kit, machining the head 25thou, v force reeds and the adjustable timming plate. I reakon that will get her cracking for a while with out a heap of money being spent.

make sure that who ever bores the cylinders knows that they need more bore clearance for forged pistons than you do for cast (stock or Pro-X)

it is written on the box (if you get wisecos), 3 thou is what they reccomend, my local guy always goes half a thou bigger than what is on the box as well.

yep

forged pistons expand more than cast when they get hot

if you are down on compression, you will have to whip your top end apart and measure the piston to bore clearance with your current pistons.

if it is no more than say 4-5 thou, you can get away with a hone (they will probably hone it to measure it anyway) and a new set of rings

i wouldnt do this however, as genuine yamaha rings cost about $130 for the set (you cant use wiseco rings on oem pistons, i think you can use Pro-x but not sure)

i would spend the money and buy a new set of wiseco pro lite piston and rings, and you will more than likely have to buy the first oversize if you are on standard bore at the moment
