 |

Hi guys.
Strange question, but is owning ATVs / Quads a big industry in OZ?
I am from South Africa and operate a Dynojet dyno with all the bells and whistles and I was thinking of immigrating to OZ. It might be worth my while to bring my dyno with as I specialise in dyno tuning quads and off-road bikes. I also build high performance motors for these bikes, so if there is a big interest, it might just make my life lot easier. |

Its not real big over here YET depending where you go. Some states are more active than others. There are a couple of others on here that have moved from South Africa I believe. Speak to "WHATEVER" on here and take a look at this thread.

PS we could do with a specialist quad dyno here in SA - being South Australia. The more quad shops and equipment here the better! Good luck. Froggy |

Come on over. As Froggy boy said, it isn't huge at the moment but you only have to watch this forum over the last 12-18 months to see how rapidly it's expanding here in Oz. Would be a good time to get in on the ground floor with the right gear & expertise.
Kinda depends which state you set up in as well.

Yeah I'm in the mighty fine state of Queensland and quads have surely been getting more popular up here and I would be booking a run on your dyno if you set up up here. The gold coast is a beautiful place to live work and play. So come on over brother.

 |
|
I came from the Western Cape ( Cape Town ) and we had a very healthy off-road/enduro scene, where we initially piggy backed on the two wheeler enduro's. In 2000 we were battling to get 15 quads to enter an enduro. Now quads have there own enduro/0ff-road races because the entries are over 120 at every race. These are regional( State ) races and there are generally about 9 a year and they count toward a Regional Enduro/Off-Road Championship endorsed by Motorsport South Africa( the governing motorsport body ). Mx has evolved pretty much in the same manner and only this year are we going to get a National Quad Championship. We do not get anywhere near the amount of entries to MX as we do to Enduro/Off-Road. South Africa has had a National Off-Road Series for many years now and I think if it was not for this competition quadding might had been very low key in South Africa. This championship brought the first Factory Team Sponsorships namely Bombardier and Yamaha. The Bombardier team dominated the Off-Road scene and was always the flashest at the races with the big truck etc. until a independent Quad shop ( ATV Powersport ) really got involved. They turned the quadding world as we had known it in South Africa, on its head. Now you could buy a 100% race ready quad and get full back up from them at the races( if you werent one of the sponsored riders ). ATV Powersport made everybody/dealer/business person sit up and say, "profanity removed"! there is money to be made from quads. And sudenly overnight the quadding industry took off. There are more quads sold than two wheelers in South Africa.
There are quad ride parks opening up every month. There are off-road, MX, Flat track and super motard races virtually every weekend.
Where intially quadding was given two pages in South Africa's only dirt bike magazine, the are now three dedicated quad magazines.
There are international quad riders riding in the Roof Of Africa race. A South African has won the quad division of the Dakar, South African Teams have raced in the Baja 1000 and the 12 hour Pont de Vaux in France. From the days of isolation South Africans are very inovative, if they can conceive it, it will be manufactured. If they need it, they buy it, if it cant be bought, they build it.
It is very frustrating for me to come from that environment to Australia and to listen to the weak excuses as to why a country with so much Quadding potential and open land cannot even conceive a National off-road series. It seems as if people are more concerned about who is sueing who, than realising the potential that the quad bike industry has. _________________ Its not if you win or lose but how you enjoyed the ride! |

just So I can put it into context....out of South Africa's 47 Million... what's the middle class {trying to be PC here}. or quad buying class consist of,,,is it 20 million or 40 million people......
.
.
.

I would not be able to answer that question, but would like to know where are you coming from asking it? Does Quadding have a class stigma attached to it? It's all about the choices one makes and where ones priorities lie, not about how much liquidity is floating about.... or is it?
At a rough estimate, and Freez can tell me if I am out or not, I would say that 8 to 10 million could afford to own at least a Blaster. _________________ Its not if you win or lose but how you enjoyed the ride! |

yeah just putting into context comparision by population....middle class probably wasn't the right word
ie; OZ 20 million people and maybe 12 even 15 million could potentially afford to own dirt bikes or powersport toys...
.
.
.
so if your guestimating 8 to 10 million in S.A.,,then yeah it is bigger over there

I am still here, just did not have time to pop in. Still thinking about the whole idea, wrapping my mind around it.
Quads are big here, but sales have gone down these last few months and they don't sell so much anymore, but I am sure they will pick up again soon.
It is not uncommon for families to own a few quads. I know people here that own 3 to 4 quads, one for each person in the family.
I find quad parks actually very boring. You ride like 10 min and you have been around the place.
My favourite riding is when you go out and ride like 100 km per day riding trails leading all over the place.
Racing is big here now and at the moment I only specialise in dyno tuning and race engine building. I started out servicing quads and repairing them, but I just don't have the time for that anymore.
Also, the technology we have here is mostly imported from the USA with a lot of companies selling basically everything you get in the USA.
You get guy that spend mega cash on their quads. I had one here the other day.
It is a YFZ450 and most of the parts on the bike is non Yamaha. It has a Titanium frame, with custom titanium a-arms and a lot of other stuff.
The current worth of this quad is around $44 000 AUSTRALIAN and by the sounds of it, it is going up soon. |

Sales have probably taken a dive for two reasons. People are buying generators and gas appliances to combat the power cuts and the left over surplus cash is been consolidated for emmigration purposes! _________________ Its not if you win or lose but how you enjoyed the ride! |

Mate if do happen to come and need a sponsor for work or business the people of Darwin is the place . There is no unemployment in ( except black fellows) Darwin is fast becoming a mining town of some sort . means big dollars salary and big dollar fun. Per person Darwin sells the most Quads and the most harleys . There is no restriction on where to ride its nearly go crazy unless you piss off a croc ( don't argue ) The average wage at the Gas plant was $127 000 last year . There is two more plants being built this year . These guys are loaded and normally have a boat , harley , quad, XR8 . I know of a guy with KDX200 in glass cabinet never started .
Beer consumption is the highest in Australia. WE now have speed limits but a change of government will fix that and OPEN speed limits will be back. where else in Aus do have a wet season and dry season . My Foreman just walked in and said fishing ,wheather and Beer nothing else matters.
