First post lads, be gentle.
Can someone with more knowledge then me (not hard) explain which is best and why as none of the high roller use shaft drive?......had a spare 1300 laying around and bought a 250 Quad to get into the ATV game...will look at the usual suspects,Honda, Suzuki, Yamy in 12 months....there are "profanity removed" all early 2000 sport quads for sale in QLD

Well, in a nutshell,

shaft drive is mainly for farm quads/tractors (ie KFX700), useful for cutting grass with an optional slasher attachment or any array of farm equipment.

Chain drive is for the real men's bikes Very Happy

Oh welcome to the forum champ.

Honestly, nothing wrong with either, both are proven and work well, chain however seems to be the popular choice for most quads, id say purely for the less working parts/weight

Chains are much easier to inspect, adjust and replace.
But then shaft drives can offer less resistance, can be zero maintenance and are great for chewing down into sand without grinding sprokets away.
But then back lash in shaft drives feels crap.
We could go on for days about the advantages and disadvantages of both, but at the end of the day...
all of the most sucessful sport quads in any class, use chain drive.

If you are buying an older quad... I know which one I'd rather pay to replace (chain).

MMMM no reply from YOGIE ???

the way i see it (i could be wrong correct me if i am) a shaft drive takes a lot more to drive the final drive(diff) but are less maintance (no chain to adjust).. a chain takes less work to drive the final drive (sprocket) so better preformace but you have to adjust and lubicate...so then it falls into your hands on how much you want to maintain your bike??

Shaft drive sucks more power than chain but needs less maintenance, however in dunes a sprocket wears 10 times more than it would than in trail riding .So shaft drive is better in sand but you need as much power in sand as you can get. It's a compromise.
Oop's to many stubbies i think i have confused myself. eek eek

When a shaft drive set up changes the drive angle through 90 degrees there is power loss (your axle spins east west and the shaft drive spins north south.
Some shaft drives like the TRX250EX are an east west motor and they save a bit of power by not changing angle twice.

Many BMW motor bikes are the same. They go for the advantages of shaft drive because they run a north south configuration engine, which avoids most of the disadvantages.

It is the same reason why a front wheel drive car can run about 5% more economically than a rear wheel drive car with the same engine.

I have seen a lot of the cheap chinese quad shaft drives (that change drive angle at the motor and the axle) blow teeth off and split housings etc.

It really depends on how you are going to abuse / ride your quad and in what conditions.

Non heat treated gear teeth and non hi tensile shafts might not help. It is common to save on cost.
Wouldnt be hard to reverse engineering these items and make some from decent quality material once they crap themselves.
Looking forward to pulling it apart and see what I got for 1300 bills.

cheers

I've been away for 3 days and I'm attacted, shame on all of you, and you know who you all are (raptor riders) can have your chains, your injections and your dry white toast (sorry... pick that movie) but my shaft driven V-TWIN 700 will do any raptor any day or any track, as long as I'm not on it of course. Sad

One of the often overlooked factors for shaft drive is that it's not easy to change gear ratios which can be a disadvantage if you want to make the most of limited power for any given riding conditions. But they are pretty user friendly becos theyre relatively maintenance free.
You should check the quad for excess weight you can trim off, cheap & easy performance, as these bikes are usually pretty hefty.

cheers.....

Good point priesty.
I think most of those chinese 110 quads that had a reverse only had 3 speed forward.
To get reverse in there they had to throw a forward gear out and the result is that the gap between 2nd and 3rd (top) is massive.
Not being able to change the final drive ratios was a real bugger if you always wanted to do a lot of riding right between 2nd and 3rd.

I hope if you did get that configuration gearbox, that they revised the ratios and closed the gap up a bit.
