How much would you expect to pay to have tappet clearances checked on an ltz400?
I asked my dealer to check them while it was in for the clutch cover recall,i figured if it needs adjusting he's got shims so no drama. As it turned out they don't need adjusting but they charged me an hour and a half labour to check them at $70 an hour .
What do you guys reckon?

seems ok, most dealer workshops arnt cheap, and 70 bucks is about the going rate...

may be worth getting someone to teach you how to check em yourself

To me that's a rip off.
But, I haven't meet a dealer that isn't.
Get a service manual and do it yourself.
If you don't have the aptitude to do it, find an independent bike mechanic. There usually heaps cheaper and I believe offer better service.

i dont have a problem with $70 an hour, but an hour and a half just to check the clearances.Checking is easy replacing shims is a pain in the ass.

The only reason i got the dealer to check was because of the recall, that wont happen again but i may take him to task over it.As far as mech aptitude goes i hope i pass as i am a motor mech by trade that is why i thought the time charged was excessive.Serves me right for bein g lazy i spose.

$70 an hour is cheap these days, most big dealerships are well over that now. I would have said 1 1/2 hrs if the valves needed adjusting ( that includes pulling the cams out to change shims), you may also find that most dealerships that don't do a lot of sport quad stuff are slower at removing and re-fitting the plastics and tank and therefore will cost you more because of it.

I pay on average of $160 for Yamaha to check everything and retune if required, money well spent I think as I sit here drinking beer and watching other people work.... laughing
