hey everyone
i would appreciate a bit of help solving a problem i justa cant pick on my honda 450

the problem is this
after riding the bike for approx 3 klm the engine shuts down before anyone mentions the carb i dont think its it cause its been checked over inside and out
the honda service i take the bike to cant warm the bike up enough to the temp i get it to while riding cause of lack of room so they cant pick the problem
it happenes at stocko first few weeks ago so i took it to the bush and same problem on dirt after a few klms when it warms up it pops once or twice from the exhaust and cuts out as if you pulled the kill switch
if i lkeave the bike for 5mins it starts first kick over and again i ride for three minutes and same thing all over again pops twice cuts out if i try to start it straight away no chance have to leave it few minutes
a mate of mine who is a mechanic was with me at the time and he reckons the lower part of engine on left hand side bike feels too hot compared to rest of engine i did change oil and oilfilter prior to this problem my self but i did everything as states in service manual the oil level in looking glass is fine the filter i put on is what they gave me at the bike shop
if anyone has any idea or had similar problem please help as i cant sleep at night when my bike is running properly
thanks in advance

Check your tank cap breather is not blocked. Sound like a vacuum is forming in the tank and shutting of the fuel flow. Otherwise I'll give you $500 for it and take the risk.

when it does it again, just take the tank cap off, if it makes a 'whoosh' noise, id say vacuum aswell

Hopefully it's a blocked fuel tank breather like the guys say but i reckon i'd put my money on a coil .

does sound like the classic blocked breather, try a different fuel cap if you can too (pinch one of a mate). other than that you may have a blocked oil line or crank case breather.

Hmmm $50 in it...
Better start really thinking.

It sounds like it is all happening too quickly to be a fuel or vacuum problem.
I'd go for an electrical breakdown.
You might be right with the coil, or...

It could be any electrical component with a transistor.
A transistor is essentially a switch. The one's in a CDI units often suffer an open circuit failure when they overheat (that's overheat electrically, not engine temperature).
If voltage regulators or CDI units do not have a good heat sink they can open circuit until they cool down again.

When it stops next, keep trying to start it in between spraying each component with a can of CRC. When you get the offending part it might start immediately from the instant cooling effect of the CRC.

Another way to test this theory is From a cold engine, run the bike till it cuts out. Then start it again as soon as it will an run it to cut out again. repeat this heaps of times and as the engine gets hotter the run time might get shorter and the recovery time longer. If this is the case the open circuit is occuring in an electrical component that is mounted to the engine somewhere. As the engine block heats up the faulty electrical component finds it harder and harder to disipate the built up heat.

Geeze I've just writen a lot of crap if it's not electrical.....

Try swappin out the CDI with someone elses for 5 minutes & see what happens. If u can't do that then inspect the CDI for any external signs of a fry up.

my 2c, I had a CDI fail once b4 similar symptoms.

Who me? Never! Evil or Very Mad

Buzzbro can have it anyway, I'd only spend it on drugs, alcohol & hookers.
