Hi guys and girls
im Darren
im fairly new to this forum, but i thought i would show you my new project.

it consists of a 05 yfz450 quad running a 06 model zx10r ninga engine.
with my exhaust mods etc it should put out around 180hp at the rear wheels, and i have geared it to max out around 230kmh in 6th.
obviously anything past 150 kmh and the risk of the tyres letting go is high, but i wanted to be able to sit on 130-140 at cruise revs not full throttle.
at around 170kg's it should be very interesting to say the least.
i will try and attach some pics of the different stages of development, and once its finished and powdercoated ( 2 weeks ) it should look almost factory fitted..

let me know your thoughts...

Sounds like fun but you will be very limited as to where you can ride it. Would make for an awsome sand dragger at Ponde or Mannum. A group of us use to go to these often and had a lot of fun. Maybe is time for a group within the club to generate some sand drag interest. There is probably a group who would be interested.

why would i be limited to where i can ride it?
dont you guys want some competition.
I reckon it will perform really well in some of your open enduro events.
the engine fits in there snuggly and is only about an inch wider then the 450 engine, so i cant see it affecting handling at all.
im waiting on some +2 A Arms from the states and i will prob order some new shocks to suit higher speed impacts.
regardless i have free run on around 50,000 acres near the SA Vic border
and i have another 10,000 acres near finniss SA.
so somewhere to ride is of little concern.
once its all going smoothly i will organise a weekend and take a few of you up there.

i think john means that you will be limited to where you can do 130 - 140kms as alot of the enduros have many tight sections. Not limited in actually competing. Sounds like you go some good riding locations.

I am sure most of us are up for competition and I am sure it would perform and handle well, my concern is of engine capacity limits as per ma rule book. I have not checked out the cc limits but from memory it was around 700cc ( to suit the Raptor I asume ) I hope I am wrong because I love checking out any new machine and the workmanship that went into creating it. All the rule stuff aside, Yes! I would love to come to your stomping grounds for a ride. Sounds absolutely awsome and a good place to get some higher speed riding in before the Finke. Sounds like the area near lake Victoria me and some mates use to ride years ago about 100k's before Mildura around the old mail route. PM me, I could do with a casual, fast ride. Cool

yeah very cool project Dangerman
170 Kilo's sound pretty bloody good Cool
heard them talk about the ninja motor compactness and good power to weight ratio,, one of the lighter bike motors..
.
once you suss-out the photo bucket thingo
would really like to see how you did engine mounts
chain/drive line-up
gussets, if any
what's the actual ninja motor weight difference
are you gunna have to change tank?
WTF? are you puttin 4 into 1 exhaust headers
.
love to give this type of project a crack meself one day

yea ive been wanting to build one for years just never got around to it.
so finaly i thought what the hell. i enjoy making stuff that's different and isnt the same as everyone else is riding. the exhaust is 4 into 2 then into two seperate yfz450 mufflers one on each side. looks awesome....
the fuel injection and airbox on the zx10r sits up on top of the motor so i am retaining this where the standardy fz450 fuel tank is to keep the air cleaner up away from any water and dust. i have then custom made a aloy fuel tank to fit under the seat running from just behind the shock out to the rear grab bar thing.it will hold 18.4 ltr and it has several baffles inside to stop fuel sloshing around.
at the back of this the standard zx10r fuel pump is installed as i figured the bike will spend a fair bit of time on the back wheels so the back of the tank is the right place for the fuel pump.
should be very interesting in the coming week or two as i get to startup and its first drive...
i cant wait...
cheers
Darren

its getting there.
ive been having grief with the standard titanium headers on the zx10r.
i had to shorten them 3 inches to fit and now they keep cracking.
so there going on the shelf as a trophey and ive got a local guy making me a custum set of headers out of mild steel and then i will get it ceramic coated. Then wrap in heat proof fiberglass stuff and they should last forever without starting to many fires...

Radiators in.
batterys done
all brakes, clutch, throttle done
chain and sprockets are all done and adjusted
just finalising the fuel tank,
and i have to mount the zx10 Key/imoboliser.
then its just a matter of plugging in the loom to everything and
firing it up.
its looking great,
once its running and ive been around the block i will strip it down again
and gusset up all the mounts etc and tidy up a few sharp corners then its off to the powder coaters.
bring it home re assemble, bolt on the hid's on the front then i will go test out what sort of speed she will do and how it handles at speed.
anyone know what a safe speed is for quad tyres?

I reckon you'de be looking for a tyre that doesn't grow too much.
Perhaps the "I RAZR"
they are a steel belted tyre so you think they'd hang together pretty well.

As some of the Finke guys. They get up to and sustain speeds around 150kmh. I'm sure they've travelled behind other competitors at those speeds and taken notice of the shape of the rear treads.

gearing is 17 / 51

but i might change the front to a 14, but i wanted to ride it first.
Are any quad tyres speed rated?

notice the hi performance tomato stake front shocks...
there to prevent the front end bottoming out at speed.

well well i think you will find it a bit of a handfull most places we ride but youll still have fun ,, and as most people know power doesnt mean everything hell even the blokes in the club on the big old predators are fast ha ha dave i had to .
the bike looks good though there was a bloke in adelaide who had a r1 raptor and it looked like "profanity removed" , almost like the frame was made from star droppers .
all in all i like it and would love a ride ,, by the way how much has it set you back

Hi Guys
well it hasnt been cheap as im using nothing older then 05 model. the engine is 06 model and has only just hit 5000 kays, so that will last for years. Come to think of it i think it may still be under warranty..
hmmm interesting..

All the new chrome molly A arms etc all help boost the price as well but in the end i will have exactly what i want and hopefully can enjoy the thrill for many years to come.

in regards to the frame theres no star droppers in sight. everything ive added has been a replacement of the standard size tube, and once i strip it down again and gusset the corners and sum of the bends it will be tuff as and look good aswell.

im keen to do a couple of your enduros here and there but im mainly building it for open grain country near pinnaroo.
the paddocks up there are massive and full of critters.

ive just had to order a vehicle down sensor so the bike cuts out when your up side down. the zx10 has them standard but mine was missing, so
i cant start it without that. grrrr... once that rocks up the twin exhaust will all be finished and the fuel tank bolted in and full of juice ready to go.
Its getting close.

Any one care to guess what it would be worth finished, if i was to sell it?
insurance value?
cheers
Darren

darryl what you talkin about i remember beating you a fair few times ,, and as for the sell price ill give you five g for it ,, na only joking ,, the r1 raptor i was talkin about was advertised in the trater for 18 i think ,, but dont expect to make your money back ,, its hard to sell any quad in sa let alone one like this as for being past by something at 230 ,, i was doin 298 on my r6 and my mate on his gsx1000 went by at 340 + that was scary
