In some circumstances it may benefit you but in others it may be another source of something to seriously hurt you.

Hi guys, long time no post for me, and it appears this site is very dead now. But I was just in here looking at the three wheeler section and stumbled across this little gem of a topic.

I know it's old news, so the OP has probably moved on with his/her life but I just couldn't let this one go by without some comment.

First up I get the strong impression that this thread appears to be a loaded up by someone with a hidden agenda, specifically to promote quad roll over protection systems (ROPS) or to sell quad roll bars. If it is not, my apologies to the OP. If it is, it's a very sad attempt, which is probably why it garnered little to no feedback at the time. however, i'll bite.

Roll bars on quads are a very bad idea which I suspect was conceived by people who are not particularly , good at, or experienced in, riding quads. I say this for the following reasons:

1. ROPS frames raise the centre of gravity of the quad, thus effecting handling of the quad, and increasing the propensity to roll in the first place.

2. ROPS frames increase the weight of the quad, thus affecting handling of the vehicle and potentially limiting the effects of rider input in response to terrain and speed changes, thus increasing the propensity to roll in the first place.

3. ROPS are hard tall structures, and quad riders are not strapped in to a quad, rather they ride on a quad. In the event of a roll over (which is more likely on a quad fitted with ROPS) there is every chance the rider will be struck by, or pinned under the ROPS frame. Which would increase the risk of serious injury.

ROPS on a quad is quite likely the most ill conceived attempt to reduce fatalities on a quad there is going. If you are considering fitting ROPS to your quad may if suggest you try any or all of the following:

A. Buy a buggy/SxS with seat belts instead.
B. Actually learn how to ride a quad
C. Always, Wear a helmet. No, seriously always wear a helmet. Gloves, boots, body armour, and goggles are good. But a helmet will save your life!
D. Practice, and Ride within your abilities
E. Purchase a quad commiserate with your experience and or abilities. (If your a novice Your first quad should probably not be an 800cc monster quad, how about something with less power and weight)
F. Make sure your quad is in good mechanical condition. (Brakes work, tyre pressures are ok, steering and suspension is working), or
G. Stick to less risky hobbys, such as computer games, cricket, or knitting.

If I was making policy on quads, I would impose a maximum weight limit for the sale of new quads. I think this limit would have to be agreed by effected groups so I'm not locked in to a specific weight at this point, but I personally don't like riding quads that weigh much more than 200kg. My view is, if your quad weights as much as a small buggy, then perhaps that's what you probably need for what your doing?

And the last thing I would do is make the wearing of helmets mandatory.

Hope my little response to an old question has not offended anyone that may be wandering though this site.
