Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone can shed some light on my problem.

I've got an 1986 YZ250 here and it's got a bit of a spark problem. As I bought it the wires had been cut from their connectors and left. It was supposed to have a bad coil.

Now, I have got another (secondhand) coil for it today and i'm a little bit stumped.

There appear to be 4 wires that come from the stator on the bike (brown, red, white and white with a green stripe).

On the end of the CDI that connects to the stator are only 3 wires (black, brown and white with red stripe).

On the end of the CDI that connects to the coil there are 3 wires (black, black and orange). The orange is to the coil I am sure and I assume the other two black are to the kill switch?

If I put a 12 volt test light on just the brown and red from the stator and turn the bike over I get a pulse/flash. So i'm assuming the stator is Ok?

Is there any way I can test if the coil and CDI are Ok?

Any help is appreciated, Cheers!

Got some help from a bike mechanic who did his apprenticeship with Yamaha in the 80's.. Turns out my CDI is two years newer than the bike and they will not work together. Solution: Get a 1986 model CDI

Cheers all

Question what was the reason for the cdi to be busted?

The CDI was not mating up to the stator properly and there was no output current to the coil.

As I purchased the bike it came with what turned out to be an 1988 model CDI.

Whereas, the bike (and stator) are 1986 models.
