According to my verniers:
27mm is about a inch and a 16th.
26mm is about a inch and 1/32.
Is it likely to be a inch and 3/64th?
Or maybe another size like whitworth...
That is getting too technical......

Commonly, axle nuts and similar get removed with a six, or even, eight sided tube spanner. A lot of sockets have a dozen or more
"corners" and only grab on the shoulders, not the flats, of the nut, and with a bit of wear, they feel loose, but sometimes do the job.

A field cure i've used ISN'T TECHNICAL. ....
Just hammer and punch or cold chisel near the shoulder and its loose. Very Happy
Or #justplainrootednow. Crying or Very sad

asuming its a castle nut it will be 27 but you should use a 6 sided socket not a 12.
if its still crazy tight get a can of freeze, and hit the end of the axle with that, it may be enough.

take the bike to your local auto part store and ask to try a single hex 27mm (six sided socket) to see if it fits, and simply undo the nut then take it back in and say it didnt fit Smile

If you go back in time and watch back to the future, Michael J Fox banged his head on the steering wheel of the delorion that got it going again. It must be that damn flux-capacitor laughing
