Hi,

I am finally about to purchase a quad so I can get back on a bike after losing my right leg in a road bike accident in 2007. I do have some concerns however over all the talk about the Stockton RVA and its future.

I am going for a ride in the coming weeks at Stockton on my mates YFZ450 to see how I go on it, I am concerned how ill fair having to be constantly sitting, standing and somewhere in between, it might be too uncomfortable for my prothetic leg. So my other option was an Odyssey or similar, until I learnt that they are now banned on Stockton and the rangers (who are just doing there job) are advising the RTA to cancel conditional regos of any buggies found on the beach.

This obviously limits me, I have a Big Red 200cc trike which im fixing up, looking to buy a quad if I can ride it, but if its too uncomfortable, my only option is a buggy. If this is the case, where can I ride it if not at Stockton?

Further to that, if the RVA at stockton is taken away, where can I ride a bike?

G'day Hallsie,

I can see your point mate and that's why it's important to work together to try and see the area stay open well into the future. If you are interested in what's happening please don't hesitate to contact me or come to our next meeting.

I'm sure your situation would really have an impact on some of the directions NPWS and WCL are currently looking at. The time is coming where we are going to need to stand together united to comment on and hopefully have a positive impact on the outcomes for all users of the beach as well as it's heritage and environment.

And in answer to where can we go for a legal gentle roll after Stockton? It's the only RVA in NSW. So that would mean private property, ride park or race track. Otherwise we will be facing the prospects of some pretty hefty fines.

Hey Hallsie,

Just thought id chime in here as i am also a fellow one legged rider! Good old road riding hey! I found myself in the same dilema when i moved to newcastle, i had ridden quads since my accident but only big automatic ag quads as, mine is the left leg and i cant use a gear shifter. I was talking with a friend of mine one day and he mentioned kawasaki made a decent automatic sport quad. 5 Days later i purchased a KFX 700 and havnt looked back. It is a big heavy beast and can really beat you up but i like to think i can still go hard and keep up with the pack! I think on a smaller lighter quad IE YFZ 450 you would be fine and not have to go down the buggy path. Although i will mention nerf bars are a MUST!
Im based in newcastle so if you want someone to go out for a ride with shoot me a PM and id be more than happy to meet up with you for a ride, youd be more than welcome to have a go on my bike as well if you like.

Great to see another amputee getting out there and enjoying life!

KFX,

Seriously? I am dead keen to have a chat to you hey, im a right leg BKA so gears will be fine, brakes im thinking *should* be ok, but who needs em right Razz

I was thinking about the nerf bars, how would I keep my prosthetic on the peg? im sure it would slip off more often than not.

Buggies are out, they are not allowed on the beach, ive talked to NPWS and that stance is never changing (interestingly enough, not becuase of them, they have no issues, but it would need to be approved by the Worimi Land Council and that will never happen)

Im in the process of getting this big red 200cc trike going, back brakes are locked on, once thats sorted ill have a bike to play on atleast and im just waiting on my mate who has a yzf450 to let me know when he is heading out again, said I can have a burn. Would be awesome if you were out at the same time, would definately like to have a chat, even to just meet another stumpy into the same things!!

Yep Im a Left leg AKA and still manage so im sure with some practice youll be awesome. The old right leg is usually a bit sore for a while after i ride though!!
The KFX 700 worked perfectly for me, automatic and has front AND rear brake levers on the handlebars so leaves the right foot free to just hang on.
As far as keeping your foot on the pegs it can be a minor problem. When i first got it i used to just ride in work boots and managed ok but the foot does occasionally slip off and hit the front wheel. LOL! I now ride in full length motocross boots and the weight of the boot helps to keep it down but when i hit bumps or whoops at speed its still a bit of an issue but not too bad. I have talked with a mate about fixing Ski bindings to the peg but havnt gone down that track yet.

Will definately have to catch up for a ride soon, im out stocko a fair bit and will be out there sometime this weekend too.
