Just picked up a YFZ450 and the guy I bought it from reckons use 95ron fuel and put the valve saver in the fuel. (like the stuff you would use in the old leaded cars that now have to use unleaded) I would of used premium 98 ron so not that sure now. Has anyone heard of using the valve saver and what is the best fuel to use for the 450's. Also the bike is fairly new maybe 8-10 hours and the manual says you need to run it in for the first 20 hours. Seems a lot of run in time to me. cheers _________________ Rusty99 |

I used to run valve saver in my fuel for my WR and I didnt notice that it really made much difference to valve life compared to my YFZ which I ran just 98 in. _________________

Valve saver's are only really needed in cast iron heads. Where alloy heads are used, they all need a hardened steel seat insert. So if it's an alloy head, you should not need a valve saver product.
Most manufacturers work out the rates of valve face and seat wear, v's lash, rocker and cam wear etc so that the clearances stay proportional throughout engine life.
Obviously checking clearances is advised but if the manufacturer has done their homework right and you are using a recommended suitable standard fuel and riding normally, in normal conditions... then you should commonly find that when you check the valve clearances, they majically appear to allways be in spec. It is not uncommon for an engine that starts of in spec to survive more than 50 hours of hard riding and still be in spec.
Most modern engines are pretty good in this respect.
However, if you find at each valve clearance inspection you are needing to adjust the valve clearances because they are riding more and more (gap closing up), then your valve face and seat areas may be wearing out of proportion to the rest of the valve train. Either wear, or the valves are 'pulling in'.
If this continues, a 'valve saver' product may help you stay in spec for longer, extend valve life and reduce maintenance. _________________ Can-Am X Team
