quite amazing how ignorant to the their own faults they can be, while we sit back quietly thinking, sheesh if we did that... "bloody quads" it would be...

see why their kids grow up intolerant to other people having a mind of their own to choose something different

Plus if some of the manufacturers did not produce ATV's there would be no factory to make their wonderful motorcycles.

Really? Are we really worried about crap like this?

Quad riders are where dirt bike riders were 20 years ago. To the average Australian we are trouble makers - Not normal - Out to cause trouble - not far behind outlaw motor cycle gangs.

Every person I talk to at a party or BBQ, even people I meet through work who asks - "So Murray, what do you do for fun?" Well, actually, I like to ride quad bikes !!!!!

I get the look of disbelief. "Oh, you don't do you? those things are death traps!"

When I meet dirt bike riders it's the same. They think we are lunatics.

Do I care? Do they understand? Will it stop me?

Another quad thread at DBW...

NEXT time you think a quad bike would be the safest option for your child, think again.

The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons has called for the tighter regulation of quad bikes, citing the severity and frequency of injuries sustained by riders.

Chair of the college?s trauma committee, Associate Professor Daryl Wall, has called for tighter restrictions on quad bikes after 17 children died between 2000 and 2005 while riding them.

?There should be a restriction of their use by those under 16 years of age and the speed of all quad bikes should be limited to 55 km/h,? he said.

However local farmers had mixed reactions to this suggestion.

Co-owner of Woodside Park Rob McIntosh made the decision to eliminate all quad bikes from his property five years ago and replace them with two-wheeler bikes as they were cheaper to run, and safer than having quad bikes on the farm.

Mr McIntosh would like to see tighter practical restrictions on quad bikes, such as roll bars and special protective helmets.

?But in reality, unless someone is policing it, it?s not going to happen,? he said.

Mr McIntosh said educating people about quad bikes and coming up with safety strategies would probably be more constructive than restrictions.

Owner of The Pine Bolong, Mark Jarrett, agreed with Mr McIntosh regarding policing regulations.

?How many people are going to adhere to them, that?s the question,? he said.

Mr Jarrett said quad bike safety was all about using common sense.

?They are not to be driven in places they shouldn?t be driven and not too fast,? he said.

Mr Jarrett said because his farm was fairly flat, there wasn?t much chance for his farm quad bikes to roll and cause harm.

?If you buy one and you have got no helmets then you have got no cover. If they want to start putting more and more regulations on things then they should also start paying us more for our milk,? he said.

Paul Timbs is the manager of his family dairy farm Tara Dairies in Berry. Mr Timbs uses quad bikes and believes there should not be an age restriction on people driving quad bikes who have grown up on farms.

?I was driving tractors when I was eight years old. By the time I got my licence I was more than competent with driving just about anything,? he said.

?That?s what happens on farms, and if you were brought up on a farm then the restriction would seem silly,? he said.

However Mr Timbs agreed with Professor Wall about the need to reduce the speed limit on quad bikes.

?There is no reason known to man why you would go anywhere near 55, so I think if you were going to restrict it, you could definitely bring it back to 40,? he said.

Nowra Motorcycles spare parts salesman Mark Clancey said his staff often pointed out the dangerous aspects of a quad bike even though it was not compulsory.

?A lot of people think the quad bike is safer than the two-wheeler and try to buy them for their kids, but unless they are a bit older, we try and steer them towards a two-wheeler,? he said.

Nowra Motorcyles also supplies clients with a quad bike safety DVD.

Quad bikes are like pit bulls they are not for everybody and maybe rules need to be put in place to stop dickheads from having them.

My 3 1/2yo son rides a raptor 90 and the mother inlaw was horrified when we told her.
We took her out with the kids a few week ends ago riding and for a BBQ.
After she saw my little fella riding at basically walking pace and having a ball with the speed limiters in place, with full safety gear. She even changed her tune.

They can be safe and great fun for kids if used correctly.

But as long as the idiots use them incorrectly there will be deaths.

My mother was the same when she was informed I bought an ATV for her 8yr old grand daughter, She was dead against it until i showed her a few videos's of her little girl riding in a well controlled area with as much safety gear as i could put on my daughter as well as having the throttle govener set so things wouldnt get out of hand, at the end of the day people who dont have all the facts just rant garbage & as a result of me informing my mum they bikes are safe if things are done right its all good
