Quad people if you want to forward your opinions on any rules, you feel could help the sport to grow, be safer and in general attempt to better the sport we love .Put your comments to MA before Mid July 2011 for consideration.

About MA http://www.ma.org.au/index.php?id=8

Motorcycling Australia GCR's "General Competition Rules"

GCR's are found in the MoMS "Manual of Motorcycle Sports

http://www.ma.org.au/fileadmin/user_upload/Documents/MOMS/2011_MoMS_Folder/MoMsWebsitefinal.pdf

Quad Rule Changes MoM's 11/03/2011
http://www.ma.org.au/fileadmin/user_upload/Documents/MOMS/2011_MoMS_Folder/New_2011_Quad_GCR_s.pdf

Making Rules and changes to rule http://www.ma.org.au/index.php?id=138

Rule Amendment or Inclusion form (Have your say here) http://www.ma.org.au/index.php?id=759

MA have a National quad advisory committee with a delegate appointed in each state http://www.ma.org.au/index.php?id=113#c1008

The delegates are generally passionate people of the sport, that volunteer advise and services to quad riders/racers and can be a link or voice to MA for the people.

I am the current Quad Delegate for NSW, my contact details are M 0422 479788 or Email len@atvpro.com.au

NSW people if you would like to discuss concerns, changes or add any rules to the GCR's then I am more than happy to discuss these with you, the other delegates and in turn MA.

If you are from another state please contact your delegate or MA direct as you choose.

The Quad delegates are scheduled to get together hopefully soon and will discuss the rules and requests for change, however MA have the final say and implement these rules, not the delegates.

Example :

22.3 FrAMeS AnD PArtS - QUADS
22.3.0.1 A quad must have:
a) 4 wheels,
b) A wheel at each corner of the machine,
c) The front wheels must be which
are used for steering and the rear
wheels for driving,
d) A maximum overall width, including
the rear tyres of (was 1400mm March 2010) now is 1270mm,

I have submitted a request for change to this rule for a Maximum width to be 1300mm.

Width 2.3.0.1 d)
A KTM 505/450 SX is near enough at 1270mm. The standard Razr tyres (2 ply) on a KTM are very soft compound that wear quick, are difficult to purchase and very expensive. If you fit another tyre of the even of the same dimension you risk going over the 1270mm (as I did with tyre that has more sidewall,6ply).
Yes you can remove the spacers ,but who really wants to race on a track with maximum grip on the narrow setting ? No one.
If I wanted to ride another discipline and put 21"on the front and 20" on the rear , same issues.

Other manufactures are likely to follow suit and bring their standard width out to 1270 mm, same problems.

It is simple to me that we make an allowance

USA rules are currently 50"(1270mm) MX ,51"Dirt Track and 52"Hill Climb

I believe in OZ the overall width should be a maximum of 1300mm for all disciplines .

It should be all about participation of our sport encouraging more people to be able to enter with what they have.

I havent has alot to do with MA for years.

However I have been involved in car based motorsport for a while now. Which is mainly governed by CAMS.

Cams started bringing in a few silly rules very similar to what it happening now with MA. What happened with that was another governing body opened up and started offering insurance with less rules and less licensing costs but still enough rules to make competing sensible and safe.

Im not a full bottle on quad events as I havent really researched it much since getting back into it for abit of fun. However its rules like this that will make event organisers look at other methods of insuring their events. I feel it iss a very conter productive rule. I understand the thinking behind it however it has been executed poorly.

I have a standard quad apart from 20" tyres its now non compliant. As a result I wont be able to compete in a MA event. So I wont. Which means I wont get a licence, I wont support my local event providers etc etc It has a flow on effect bigger than MA and they are either blind to that or just dont care.

Thats my opinion. Sorry if you dont like it.

If 1270 is cutting it too fine for standard bikes then why was it changed? Is there a way we can petition MA for a rule change? I'll have to go and measure my bike up now when I get home to make sure I am compliant as I have just applied for a MA license and am getting my quad set up for the Dash and some other MA events...

it depends on which event you go to and whether or not the will be checking. been to a few MA events myself and never had my quad measured, don't actually know the width off the top of my head, but if you are racing at high level events it may become an issue.

Yeah, they went from overly generous to overly strict.

Send them an email (As mentioned link above)with your concerns and if they get enough response they may very well change this rule and any others of concern
