 |
|
Hi guys, thought I'd le you see a vid I made of me and a mate racing Grasstrack in Germany last year. I used to only race speedway and grasstrack in the UK. My mate does the same plus a bit of supermoto. The first race is onboard with me on my YFZ450. It's pretty quick but due to the fact that I've only been riding quads for 2 years and I'm 108Kg it's me that's the problem not the quad!
Lee on the other hand is far better (second race). He's been racing quads for 12 years and is a streak of piss - 60Kg! He is 5 times British quad speedway champion and has won the final in every grasstrack he's entered so let's just say he's quite good! He rides a Laeger framed Yamaha Banshee, we did put a 420cc motor in but it seased up in practice so we had to put the 350cc back in.
The event we were invited (and paid!) to ride in is called the Bergring Teterow. This is not a normal oval grasstrack but a mountain grasstrack which means it has jumps and some right hand bends. We race 4 laps at 1,877M per lap. The event has been run for 90 years and is all about the solo grasstrack bikes. The quads, sidecars and moto x bikes are a support class. The crowd last year was the smallest they have ever had at 15,000 but they do get as many as 50,000 there to watch the 2 days of racing.
On the Saturday we had to do 2 4 lap practice sessions anti clockwise, then 2 4 lap practices clockwise (only us and the MX bikes do this). Then in the afternoon we had a 4 lap race each way and the same again on Sunday. In practice your fastest lap seach way are added together and that gives your position on the grid in all the 4 races. I was 13th fastest but lee only managed 1 lap anti clockwise in practice then his engine went. As he missed practice clockwise he didn't put in a time and was therefore last on the grid which meant he had to spend most of the race fighting his way through the field.
Lee was in for a real chance of the podium or a win as in his first race he broke the lap record that had stood for 4 years, he managed a new average speed of 109Km/h. On the drop down the hill we were being clocked at 168Km/h. The top 4 incidently were riding 700cc single cylinder KTM 4 strokes and Lee kept up on his 350cc!
It was a great weekend and well worth the 3,300Km round trip from the UK in the motor home. In fact it was such a great weekend and an honour to be invited to race that I'm doing it again this year! I'm leaving the YFZ450 here in OZ and I have bought a Banshee to race with. It's a 375cc so should hopefully pull my chunky ass round ok! The weekend had a slight downer as one of our mates was killed in the solo grasstrack class, but racing is dangerous and it's a risk we all take.
Anyway, enjoy the vid and I'll let you know how this year goes in June!
Mike

I didn't quite reach that but I was very close.
1,415mm tyre circumfrence
16T front 36T rear sprockets
Max revs recorded on Dynatec ECU was 10,487rpm
Theoretical speed based on this is 167Km/h
Lee was faster, with exactly the same bike he has previously been radar'd at Pont De Vaux 24Hr Enduro in France at 181Km/h |
