MA generally does not allow 'racing' on the raod in normal MX gear.
The events above are practice days, not racing (non-competition).
This sort of activity has allways been allowed under MA as long as it's not racing.

MA have rider division, track days and a lot of road bike stuff that all ride on bituman that never requires full leathers.
Also, Road sections for enduros are usually non competative and don't require full leathers either.
Safari, Condo etc etc.

Minimum standards for Non-competition are detailed on page 12 of the MA Non-competative Manual (back section of GCR's) last paragraph of section headed 'Skin Protection'.

Specifically this section refers to the need to protect yourself "from sliding along the tarmac, and protection from hitting the tarmac."
The later is probably the most important for quads as our machines are just about impossible to low side and slide for great lengths along the tarmac and we also can not achieve anywhere near the 200kmh+ speeds that 2 wheelers can.

Full MX riding gear is more than adequate Smile

Also, the Safety gear required for Off-Road, Non-competition is detailed on page 6 of the 2010 Non-competative Manual.

Last one for 2010 done and dusted.

Only Noodles, Me and MrsB took sideways to the bitumen in some pretty hot conditions.
There were heaps more 2 wheelers there, and they were happy chatting with us about how cool the quads looked out on the black stuff.
Again, no quad incidents at all, but half a dozen 2 wheelers went down and a few of them in a big way on the high side.

These practice days are expected to be run more regularly for 2011 and planning has started on the 25 - 33% dirt section to create a full motard track for race events.

Thanks to Jo at TBMP Smile

Yeah JRE, it will be as the MA Venue Standards require.
which i think is minimum 20-33% dirt with minimum 2 jumps.

Pictures just don't do Quad Drifting and justice at all...
But here is a quick report and some pics for those interested

A few vids of experimental quad drift at TBMP up on youtube.
Hard to capture, as it feels twice as wicked in real life.

Still playing and learning a lot mate.

You'll be one to watch.
We'll have to wait till Med Feb to see you out there (at the latest).
Maybe one late in Jan if we get the interest.

Looking forward to the next one Smile

These are one set of new treads that we'll be testing at the next drift practice.

At 18x9.50/8 they measure at just 16.5 inches tall.
Compared to my ITP SX's next to it which measure a true 18 inches tall.
Compound seems harder than the SX's and groove depth is only 4mm.
But maybe having that much surface area the wear life will be significant compared to an MX tyre.
Lets just hope they dont warm up and grip like Formula 1 wets.

We are looking for the best ATV drift tyre.
Ideally it will be the one that offers the least traction and longest wear life and be cheap (80% MX tyres only last a 1 hour session with a rider going for it).

Less traction will help keep the speeds down and make it more about drift 'angle'.
The easier it is for the rider to achieve greater angles the better.
Most tyres we have tested so far offer too much drive and not enough slide, which translates to just plain old high speed bitumen racing.

Yell out if you know of the crappiest traction tyre out there laughing

This might be good for clearing out my shed full of old tyres I've been hanging onto.
