Guys,
I have just installed the hi flow K @ N filter and adapter, I run it with the baffle out of the exhaust (that's how I got it)
I am now running with no air box lid and prefilter installed.
Now it just dies at about 4-5K RPM, any hints..
Do you think i need a jet kit or could i have done something when i installed it...
Please help as i want to ride on Sunday and it does not feel right... |

Go a jet kit.I did & after 5ks into the nxt ride,(first time going right without the air box lid)-spent a night in hospital. Allready had bigger pilots & drilled mains but the thinner needles(more fuel mid throttle) & different diaphragm springs made a lot of difference.Follow the instructions for youre setup & altitude etc. -or put the lid back on _________________ Cheers-Redted. 04 Raptor |

you at least need to go up a couple of sizes on the mains but your best bet would be to get a jet kit complete with needles and jets to get it sorted out properly. _________________

I found starter cable has snapped out of the carby, what is this used for and is it possible to remove, does it control the choke as it seems to control the choke from the look of the service manual ?
any advice would be gr8, thanks |

What do you meen by 'starter cable' & 'snapped out' of carby?---The 'choke' cable on mine runs from the left bar grip to the top left side of the left carby. The bottom end of this cable can come out of place & hold the choke on a bit. _________________ Cheers-Redted. 04 Raptor |

the choke cable, in the manual it says "starter cable".
the choke cable is sitting out of the left carby about 3-4 cms and I cannot move it at all, it holds the choke on and now it blows and coughs and farts.
can I remove it, just it just slip out or do you have to take the carby apart to remove it ?
Can you run the bike with this cable removed ?
cheers |

Sounds like the cable has been stretched. Use a 12 or 13mm??? open end spanner to unscrew the fitting (on the end of the cable) from the side of the carby. The spring & plunger should come out easily. If you can't fix the problem/get parts before the w/end,unhook the inner cable & refit the plunger & spring & screw back in, the fitting on the outer cable. _________________ Cheers-Redted. 04 Raptor |

| If the cable is hanging out of the side, the cable is loose and the part that holds it onto the carby has been removed and plunger should just pull out of the carby freely with the cable attached right ? Is this correct ? As I cannot move the cable, the plunger seems stuck in the carby, (the plunger is like a plug that fits in their if I am not mistaken) should I just hit it with WD 40 where the cable goes in the carby to try and free it up ? |

Yes,the plunger should just pull out of the carby freely with the cable attached. Its prob gummed up with old fuel residue.Unscrew the retainer and spray some CARB CLEANER (available from auto stores in pressure paks) in past the spring. It may need a few sprays & time to soak in between. _________________ Cheers-Redted. 04 Raptor |

Yep, cheers, it worked a treat..
Got it out, getting a replacement today...
Bike is still running bad though with the choke seated correctly, spent all weekend on it and could not work out the problem.
Thanks for all your help, had to take it to the bikeshop in the end, don't want to miss another weekend of riding...
cheers
guys
Still think it will need a jet kit, will see what the bike shop does with it first, maybe the carby is full of the crap that was holding in the choke ?

I have been looking through the forum and can't seem to find anyone with my setup for more info on jetting...
My bike is stock, as far as engine and exhaust goes.
I have the raptor 660 2001 standard exhaust system with the spark arrester removed.
I had the standard airbox and filter, (which ran fine) I have bought a K & N high flow and adapter and fitted it, I WANT TO RUN IT WITHOUT THE AIRBOX LID.
As soon as I have done it it runs like crap...pops, backfires and dies if you keep the throttle pinned.
If I apply the choke when I start pinning the throttle it gets better... if this helps diagnose...
It idles fine, I took it to a bike shop as I did not want to stuff around and wanted it ready for a weekends ride. (Stupid me)
Their fix was stuffing the airbox intake with foam and restricting the flow of air, it runs better like that but backfires when you back off the throttle (but why buy a high flow filter, I say, can't believe these guys ! )
They did reset the float levels and cleaned out the carby and reset the needle positions, but the lid of still pops and dies ....hopeless)
I need to rejet (this is what I asked them to do, bloody hopeless) as I would imagine from reading the posts in this site...
Please send me your suggestions on what I can do to the carb setup, what size jets etc I might be able to use.
I usually run it along the beach or in the dunes at stockton so not far from sea level.. Any help would b gr8...cheers |

Get bigger pilot jets go up one spot on your needles and put 155/160 mains and check that the carbs arnet coming of the intake boots.
Try that see how you go. _________________ FOUR STROKE WARS CHAMPIONS USA 2009

I have checked the carbs are not coming out the the intake boots...
If I fit the airbox lid with the restrictions it runs but only backfires a bit on decelleration...
I will source some parts...
Any idea on what size pilot jets ? |

So you're running with a no lid setup and stock exhaust correct? Correct...
If you're going to increarse airflow, you need to increase fuel flow. You said they "reset the needle positions", well the stock needles were probably fine on the 3rd clip.
The needle postions were set to to 4th clip, i have now set these back to the 3rd clip (from the top)
The bike needs to be rejetted, either by them, you, or someone else. You'll probalby want something like mikuni 145 left, 150 right mains, oem needles in stock 3rd clip position, and you'll probably want to turn your fuel screws out a bit to make it idle better. It idles fine
I'll give it a go, thanks, i will buy 150, 155 and 160 just incase
It's also possible from what you're describing, if it's as bad as it sounds, that your bike's parking brake is not adjusted properly and the associated rev-limiter is kicking in causing essentially an almost complete loss of power. No not the park brake, if you restrict air flow the bikes nearly runs fine...
does it run ok (or better anyway) if you put the airbox lid back on it? Yeah heaps better.... just backfires a bit on decelleration when you ride it
Take the foam out of the airbox and try 25 pilots at 2&1/2 turns out on each screw, 150/155 mikuni mains with needles on 3rd clip, I will give it a go, cheers
My bike was too rich, my choke was broken previously once i found the problem i found that choke cable was broken and just sitting threre and had to get that fixed which has also been thrown into the mix....Got the valve clearences done also.
I checked the float levels, did the clear tube test. All fine there....
When it came back from the shop they had 6 turns on one side (air mixture screw) and 2 on the other carby (bit out of spec i would say), I have now changed it to 3 turns with the pilot changed it has made a difference, does not bog down until bit over half throttle, bought the wrong main jets today so back to get the correct mains tomorrow....I found i had 140/145 mains in it.
Explosive racing added....
pilot 27.5
set the needle on the 3rd clip from the top.
main 155 left and right 160
Dont run the lid just the filter.
Take it for a run around the block let me know how you go.
Explosive racing said to try 27.5 pilot jets, I have tried this , need to get the new mains in order to do more testing |

Today I changed the jetting.
I ended up with needle on 4th clip and 160/165 and 27.5 pilots, three turns on the mixture screw, no backfiring, no hesitations.
Still not enough to run without the lid off the airbox, though I have cut all the restrictions out of the airbox lid, left the chamber in the middle, but cut all the rest out.
I did this by covering the airbox and uncovering it to fine tune as best as I could get it...
I still have to run with the lid on so.
Still dies at 80% throttle, with the lid off.
I must say now it flies now.... 1, 2, 3 off tap, front wheels off the ground every gear except 4th and 5th.
Now by touching the throttle in first a touch lifts the wheels off the ground, much better, but think I go go more....
Do you think I still need to go more in the jetting to run without the airbox lid ? Say 165/170 |

Today I changed the jetting again.
I ended up with needle of 4th clip and 165/170 and 27.5 pilots, three turns on the mixture screw, no backfiring, no hesitations on idle, middle response is good too.
Went for a quick run down the street, now hestitates a little at top end.
I went with the airbox lid on and it runs better with it on...
Will try another run on the weekend.
Close enough to run without the lid off the airbox for now..(maybe)
One thing, can the fine tuning up top end of the throttle be done with the mixture screws or are the mixture screws only to adjust the idling....any responses would b gr8.. |

Jetting is done, ended up with 170/175 mains.
Changed clips back to third clip as was a bit too rich, but does not seem to be great up top, no smoke, grey pipe now...does not seem to rev as much though, think I may have chuck the lid back on and be done with it, poor lil thing doesn't like it..need some more testing time.... time to tweak ya know
If i throw the lid back on i will have to rejet again to even things out and lean it up some more...
In the next week i'm buyng a full system, either GYTR/LTE duals/curtis sparks or the yoshi. Trying to make an educated buy, have done a lot of homework about em all... Just to throw more spanners in the workz... |

Hey,
Think that is the key huh...
The needles ?
I chose not to buy the jet kit as I could get the mains for $8 and most jet kits do not go as high as I have gone (that I know of)...
I thought the needles mainly gave more fuel at midrange ? |

hmm, well I thought I was goin in the right direction...
Saving $$$$ never gets anywhere hey !!
Now I don't know which way to go...
I now have 150/155/160/165/170 and 175 mains...Which I thought would do the job ?
When you purchase needles should I also buy the slides ?
I did notice a slight mark on one of the needles, they are straight though, half way up the needle a see a slight indent.. I thought it would do the job as they have a lot of adjustment, they are no good eh ?
OR should I just start from scratch and but the whole jet kit including the needles ? The money required in not a question as I just want it right... |
