I'm keen on getting a quad bike soon.
Everyone tells me to get a 2 wheel dirt bike - which im not that fussed on.

Anyway im trying to find out places to ride quads and what the go is with registration. I really want a quad i just keep hearing things about having to buy registration for it, and there are hardly any places to ride anymore - i live in bris ( looking at the sunshine coast and down north). My mates ride in the national park on the 2 wheelers.

Any tips on where to ride for a newbie.. feedback on registration too would be appreciated.

Hi Alex, and welcome to the forum.
It sounds like your into trail riding. That is good and bad.
AS it currently stands, you can get a quad bike conditionally registered, and the links on this are posted as a sticky at the top of the Qld page.
That is a flawed system as is currently available.
Previosly, conditionally registered quad bikes, and other vehicles were tolerated in the State owned lands, but recent enforcement of policy, has started to drive the riding further underground. eek ( It is also starting a ground swell of Queenslanders demanding a fair go. )

Current legal options for trail riding quads then revolves around ride parks and organised rides. I hope that helps.

Thanks for the reply.

Yeah trail riding..
So if i want to ride in particular areas i'll have to get a registration.

Basically im getting a quad, for a bit of fun on the weekends and in holidays. New to all this so don't know much about them or where to ride them, just seems like a good escape to the coast for some outdoor fun.

I'll have a read up on the article you mentioned.

cheers.

You've got this 'quad' idea and at first it may seem as though there is nowhere to ride.

You've already started talking to people with quads.
Once you get one, that will happen more and more.
You probably even assume that you'd never get serious enough to get out and race one.
In time you will discover that there is nothing that you can't do on a quad.
And that even most BBQ's can be complimented with some sort of quad action.
Anywhere people have fun on anything with an engine in it... will light up in your brain as somewhere you can have even more fun on a quad.

Once you own one, more and more places to ride grow from nowhere.
You'll really enjoy this new disease that is slowly taking over your life.
You'll meet lots of great people and find yourself happily travelling ridiculous distances to go and play on your quad.

We'll look forward to meeting you at Finke or the MX Nationals in a few years time then laughing

Gday Alex,

Couple of clubs to find out about are the QQRA and the S.E. Atv riders. Both are promoting family fun first and above all else. The QQRA have several trail riding get-togethers every year and the next 1 is a new years bash at Manar Park http://www.ozatv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=16211 . The QQRA are also heavily involved in organising and promoting major Quad MX events in Qld with the biggest win for the club so far being the 2011 quad nationals. Check out www.qldqra.com

Have you had any experience riding quads befoer (or even dirt bikes). From age 13 I rode a 350 banshee (loved it, but wanted to start racing), moved up to a 400 when i was 17 and outgrew it within 6 months and regreted buying it as I needed a 450.

But, what you buy will depend on what sort of riding you are planning on doing. If you are going to be the trail/social rider, a 400 would be excellent. Strong, reliable engine with reverse, comfortable and damn good fun.

If you are contemplating racing, or just want that bit of extra sportiness, go for a 450.

Alex, you will be spoiled for choice for quad bikes.
There is quite a few manufacturers and various models available.
MX, trail riding, 4wd and 2 seater models are all available.
You can do a lot worse than to spend a saturday morning at Moss St, Springwood to get some ideas, and help work out a budget.
Some forum members have bikes for sale too. Just keep a eye on the buy and sell OR put a post in the wanted section.
The QQRA are a good crew who do some pretty good social weekends and run various events throughout the year. They've a few members on the Sunny coast. There is also a few trail riders amongst them......
Legal trail riding will start coming on stream in the new year also, and will be posted in the Qld section when it is closer.
