i know its a loaded question but what is the best quad for enduro racing. im looking for a quad that can handle desert enduros such as finke and gassy dash while still being a fun quad to take round the dunes with maybe a little mx work thrown in. the key point though is that it can do the desert enduros without to much extra mods to the bike

That is true EDDIE Tattingham came 2nd on a old Blaster.. Brute Force won that Day . Eddie and I rode together until I cliped a tree and broke my wrist.. I kept it a secert because I want to ride Finke that year. That year was the driest Kamfari ever. Normally eddie only does 3-4 laps..

The Can am boys came to Kamfari but when home with tails between their legs and alot of bent , broken managled buckets of spare very 2nd hand parts.... lol Our hospitally was great but I think the race was a wii tuff for them.

Thanks Jumbo, but I think there is very little out there that in stock form can be competitive, and by that I mean ridden hard and still be there at the end of the day. Desert racing puts demands on motors that the likes of the Finke do not. The Gas Dash for example has a 137 Km stretch in the river bed and then when you are done with that, you are expected to run 110 Km's of flat out( as fast as you can )( this section the likes of Vern Strange is doing 180Km/h on his two Wheeler).
In South Africa the only quad that used to be able to withstand these types of conditions ( with the minimum of mods ) was the DS650, Beery used to race one at the Finke a couple of years back.
At the Gas Dash there have been DNF's from every brand but in all honesty the Yamaha Raptor has probably had the best overall results, if you take wins and placings into account.

IRS 525 outlaw, but to race it you would have to do work. like anybike i suppose. no bike even a raptor would be comfortable racing flatout enduro on in stock trim.

all the little things like dampner, wheels tyres, handlebars etc etc would need changing that throws every bike out of the stock category.

reliability is the key and durabiliy of parts, pending on your budget.

you have to think about all the little things, not just about what bike has won what or DNFed certain races, useually DNF's are associated with lack of maintence or the lack of how much preperation work has been done on the bike before the race and not becuase of the brand of bike. i know if you had a big budget you could make a blaster win Finke/ Safari but it would be far from stock.

sounds like you are looking for the best all round racing quad ( if you want to ad MX in ) . i think the best all round quad is the 525IRS . for its weight , power , traction and standard set up .

But i think the question is how competitive do you want to be ??
because as shown in the other posts , you can race almost any bike you want in any event , you need to decide whats important to you . if you want to finish and have fun and dont care where you end up , find the bike you are most comfortable with price , brand , durability , parts availability and cost , resale value , local dealer and even if you have mates on the same so you can share spares and set up info when racing , as well as bulk purchases .

Roycroft, I am sure that there are DNF's that are related directly to Preperation & maintenance but there are guys out there that I know are fanatical about Prep and maintenance and still have DNF. I dont think that Maggotts for one, would have gone through all the hassle to convert his bike into something else if it was reliable in oem trim. I am sure everyone will agree that to go to an event like Safari and not do Prep or Maintenance would be foolish, yet Maggots still DNFed. I have seen factory backed & maintained quads in South Africa DNF. The biggest privately Sponsored team in South Africa changed brands from Yamaha to Honda mid season because that year model YFZ was not proving reliable and they went on to win the national offroad championship for three years in a row breaking the strangle hold that the DS650 had.
Different horses for different courses.

as i said useually useually DNF's are associated with lack of maintence or the lack of how much preperation, Quality of maintence and R&D is another thing. i wouldn't go to the shops let alone safari with that thing called the interceptor
your factory backed teams your talking about are modifying standard quads, they DNF becuase they played around with them. you have to expect that they know the risks when you modify engine, frame fuel system etc etc,

i know that in every race i compete in that i could DNF because of i have modified my bike, if i do dnf its my fault not Polaris.

DNF's can happen, stock or modified
these are machines designed by humans, made by humans, or machines made by humans, and then modified by humans,
Occasional DNF's are innevitable
major vehicle manufacturers recall their stock/oem product all the time, to rectify issues within the design of their products, c'mon roycroft, you're smarter than you're last statement

I believe a stock Bombardier DS650 would eat most races in Australia, and they have, many times, but I assume you want something modern?

Plus, MX is out of the question.

Mind you, they LOVE DUNES.

whats the best enduro bike "out of the box" ? i spent a lot of time looking for an answer , and this is what i think . it would be the DS650 if they were still in production , but now would be between

525 irs
700 Raptor
700 xx
and the can-am 800

all need money spent to race , and the bigger bikes work better with bigger loads ( like Paul)
