I know a few guys on here like to go all out on their engines when they build them, and others like me try to spend as little as possible, so I thought I would put the question out there. How much do you spend on your engine and what have you had done to it? _________________ "If in doubt go flat out"

You can have a bike that is fully worked (BUT) if you have not got the balls or even more important the fitness it will not count .
You would be surprised how little work is done to the Bikes that are winning the races Cheers |

hi jarrod,
you saw brentons 450 last weekend and that motor is stock only the cam mod done , it has a pipe and a pro-design (foam) air filter and jetted to suit, air box lid on.
he spent more on the front suspention (roll design)long travel a-arms and fully adjustable shox, axle, omf bead locks and razr two's tyres.
the rear shocker is stock 05 never been serviced
he rides hard like an nutter (you know how he drives)and wins most races he entres , the only DNF he has had on the 450 was a stock tie rod end broke.
note also that he has gone through exhust pipes at least one a year as thay do all seem to fall apart from the heat the 450 4st produce.
save your money and buy new gear and good quality that will last for years. _________________ hustleratv.com.au 0407 797 780

LOL. I just polish and chrome everything. I only worry about what you can see. The prettier the better. _________________

If she is running ok mate dont spend a cent on it. If you want to spend some coin on your bike mate throw it at suspention _________________ Smitty |

Yeah, like I said I'm not looking at doing anything for as long as possible, that engine is still going really well and hasn't let me down, touch wood . Next thing is a pipe for it and some shocks when I can afford it all. Maybe old santa might bring me a pipe.
And yes I know how Brenton drives and rides when he passes me, sometimes only on 1 wheel. I thought his bike would have had more done to it than that though. _________________ "If in doubt go flat out"

Engines as std as possible. Most people can not out ride a std engine.
Good air filter for reliability.
First thing I would spend money on is lots of fuel to go practice with.
Second thing is a good steering damper. _________________ When I'm racing I'm living..... everything else is just waiting. |

Feral, I have built some obscenly over the top engines for MX quads over the years, but it always come back to reliability, if you want to spend 6K on a motor its pretty easy, dosn't mean that it is going to last long though....
Once you've got some good suspension under you then for the most part the basics will do, pipe/filter/jetting if you really feel the need for more then start with getting your head flowed, higher comp piston (12.5:1 is plenty in a YFZ) and a Vortex ignition. If you do the assembly work yourself then you woudn't be looking at more than $1200. but like i say, you need the rest around it first. _________________

i won't bore you with the gorries here but nathan's engine has been untouched since august 09, and if you've seen him ride you'll know whether it's had an easy life or not
the key is reliability, no high comp piston. as john mags said air filtration is a priority, but the ability of the engine to breathe, and at the right time is what produces performance. the more it can breathe (and i mean correct fuel/air mixture in and as close to completely burnt exhaust as possible, out , not blow by or oil consumption, refer brenton on oil consumption lol)
the term for this is volumetric efficiency
suspension will make you and the bike go faster for longer,
gearing is also important, you will get better results with little effect on reliability by matching suspension and gearing to conditions and rider style
pm me if you want more details on the breathing thing |

Feral when i 1st took my bike to Pete he said "do the suspension 1st "(of course i didnt & have regretted it until only recently when i finally did it) But when we figured out what/how we were going go about doing things he asked "what do you want out of this bike?"...i said "to wake the motor up & make it come alive but above all keep it reliable"....all the above mentioned by Pete is what he more or less did to mine....its reliable...Pete advice is good smart advice...good luck with it _________________ 04 TRX 450r
