Young girl dies in quad bike crash
THE property on Thistle Island, off Eyre Peninsula, has hosted many happy holidays for the Scipioni family over the past 20 years. Now it stands as the scene of a tragedy that has devastated the close-knit Adelaide family.
Relatives of seven-year-old Sienna Scipioni, including her parents and two older siblings, are struggling to come to grips with her death in a quad bike accident.
Shocked family and friends gathered at the home of her grandfather, restaurant identity Enzo Scipioni, in Payneham yesterday.
Mr Scipioni, the former owner of La Casalinga Restaurant at Unley, is also the owner of the Thistle Island property where the family had been staying when the tragedy unfolded late on Sunday afternoon.
A friend of the family said yesterday that the death of the Loreto College student had devastated the local Italian community.
"She was a beautiful girl - absolutely gorgeous," the woman said.
"This morning I was devastated at just the thought.
"She was a bubbly girl and dressed as a young lady already, she was beautifully dressed."
The woman described Sienna as a girl who would never get into mischief and was adored by the local Italian community.
"She was beautifully mannered," she said.
"She was much loved by the grandparents, as you could imagine.
"She was very friendly, a little lady, very well-behaved and very nice."
Sienna's death was the 16th involving quad bikes in Australia in 2012.
Just a fortnight ago Federal Employment Minister Bill Shorten announced plans to ban all children under 16 years of age from operating an adult-sized quad bike in any workplace, which includes farms.
Sienna was a passenger on the quad bike, which was on a road at the time of the accident.
Despite Thistle Island being privately owned, its roads are public, so her death is included in South Australia's road toll.
It totalled 93 for 2012.
A Thistle Island resident, who did not want to be named, said the small community was devastated by the accident.
"This is a terrible tragedy," he said. "It was a once-in-a-million accident |

yep its sad that all these deaths could have been prevented in one way or another, but as long as people arent being educated properly and not wearing suitable saftey gear, this will keep happening.
I know quads are dangerous, but arent motor bikes, pushbikes ,cars etc aswell.
As a parent , i have done everything possible in educating my daughters and making sure they have all the gear they need ,to ride safe.
But its the minority that ruin it for the rest of us quad riders, its the attitude of she will be right mate,(the greatest aussie attitude to issues)
So before the kids are banned fron Quads, we should worry about the stuff we can do before saying its the quads fault.
what do you guys reckon? |

"Quad bikes and riding them is NOT INHEIRATANTLY DANGEROUS!
It is, however, extremely miss-forgiving of negligence, ignorance and stupidity....."
Make a good bumper sticker I reckon.
Author unknown but originated in the USA in the 1950's and was originally worded for two wheelers such as Harley Davidson.... _________________ Remember. We elect politicians, but we have to deal with bureaucracy.

Unfortunately Quads are being blamed for peoples stupidity.
We all feel sorry for the little girl that was killed but some are blaming the Quad instead of the fact of not wearing a helmet, having more than 1 person on the quad, riding the quad on the road why are these the quads fault?
People need to take responsibility for their actions.
Check out the story on ABC 7.30 Report.
