Still wont start from cold,
Plug, Carby, Fuel I have done
I took the lid off, and seems like there is little or no gap at the intake valve,
This has happended before, While I had the lid off it seems like the timming is out compared to the settings in the work shop manual,
at TDC the cams intake and exhaust are 1 lug forward compared to the brass indicator on the timming chain. But the cams look like they are in the right positition.
I had this rebuilt by a bike machanic about 2 years ago but it realy has only done about 15 hrs in that time,
Should I send it back to him ??
I was led to believe with a high comp piston it should be slightly retarded??
I can do this work myself, Timming, new shims, but i am limmited if there is prob with the valves thats when my lack of knowlegde will grind me to a holt.
Yes all that know if I had of bought the Yamy I wouldnt have this problem...... _________________ 04 Polaris Predator 500 with mods

Poped the lid off again and the cam lobes look like thay could go higher according to the pic in the manual but this would even make the timming markes even further out.
not sure may have a vavle issue again. next I will have to try and get a shim kit.
It started but I had to give it 1/2 throttle and keep the motor turning over for a bout 30 sec. and then it fires. I used some 98 octane I will get some 100 tomorrow and try it...
Got me stuffed .. _________________ 04 Polaris Predator 500 with mods

We used to have this very same problem with the Predators in South Africa.
The valves would pull into the head and make the motor difficult to turn over.
We were always getting the valves shimmed and no sooner than we had done it, the motor would start first time.
We would race and then put the bike on the trailer, and by the time we got home the motor would not turn.
Check the valve clearances.
I spoke to Polaris Central in Perth when I first got to Aus and Graham told me he had never done the shims on a Predator. He thought it could have been bad quality fuel in South Africa _________________ Its not if you win or lose but how you enjoyed the ride! |

I have, and the intake is very tight, the exaust is ok. This is the second time this has happened only this time the bike has probly only done about 10 hrs, and it mushroomed the valves last time.
Crap fuel makes alot of sence, but I dont think it is the only problem cuasing it, what did you end up doing to fix it, or did you just keep changing shims and valves?? _________________ 04 Polaris Predator 500 with mods

If I remember correctly, we changed to a more robust valve and just lived with the shimming on a regular basis. All I know is that the shims were not always readily available, so if memory serves me correct, I think the DS 650 shims were the same.
I think that if you run the Predator hard( any form of racing ) check the clearances every 10 hours just to be safe. _________________ Its not if you win or lose but how you enjoyed the ride! |

you are describig an ignitin timing issue but this is relating to a valve timing issue. That said, Cuzo, when you ar lining up the timing marks to check the cam timing, are you using the flywheel to find top dead centre? Try using a screw driver in the plug hole and see if the flywheel is n the correct spot, if the flywheel isn't timed correctly it will show your cam timing is wrong |

Its funny you mention that last night when I put the timming back to how the pic shows in the manual, not how the machanic set it up, I put a screw driver in the plug hole and at TDC it seemed to be right at the point were the piston only needs a fraction more and it jups downward.
I droped the intake shims 600 thou. about .15 smaller than what was in it..
and double checked the timming.
There is always an anxious moment when you have to get yourself to push the little green button. pushed it three or four times quikly just to get the oil back up there.
Damthing fired first go and it idles, only thing is I have lost my test track, they went and put houses up alround me.
Question: do you think I should pop the top and check the clearence, or do you wreckon its all good, there were no funny noises and I had new left over parts this time. _________________ 04 Polaris Predator 500 with mods
