CALGARY - These guys don’t horse around.
What began as a normal quad ride in Ghost-Waiparous area of Alberta turned into a tale of a heroic rescue for six Calgary friends who saved the life of a wild horse found stuck up to its neck in muskeg soil.
Matt Cree, Mike Yorke, Todd Cunningham, Keith Alexander, Cole Graham and Ian Caldwell were out enjoying a quad ride Sunday when they came upon the animal about 6 km from the highway with its heading sticking out of the frozen swamp, struggling to get free.
“As we came down a hill, we saw just a horse head sticking out,” he said.
“We could barely see the back of it - just the top of its back sticking out of the water. It was on its belly and its legs were underneath. ... We figured it was dead if we left it.” The group was close enough to reach out to the horse and feed it a bag of Cheezies and part of a sandwich they had left over for lunch, along with a handful of grass as they discussed their strategy to get it free.
As the ice began to break and the animal got further and further away from them, the group took a rope they had with them and tried securing it around the horse’s neck to tow it out.
But when they thought towing it by its neck would injure the horse, the guys had another idea.
“One of the other guys got on its back and with the tow rope and put it around its belly,” said Cree. “We hitched it to the quad and, with five guys and a quad, we got it out.” After the rescue, the horse lay still for awhile, stretched its legs and then sauntered away slowly.
Cree said the group decided to stop and help the horse because they felt they had no choice.
“We thought it would die,” he said. "We assumed she had been there overnight. ... We could see cougar tracks. We thought for sure she couldn’t make it out.” Cree said he figured the horse was wild and part of a pack of others roaming nearby.
He said the group of men, who had no experience working with animals, were overcome with relief when they saw the horse walk away from the thick swamp.
“We were worried about injuring her but we were super relieved,” he said.
“It was a lot of laughs.” _________________ Remember. We elect politicians, but we have to deal with bureaucracy.
Notice that crazy in the bureaucrats. |
