hi all,
just bought a quad for my wife and was after some ideas. I have just replaced the drive belt as it was the original (and i broke it) overall its in good nick, already has a k&n filter (as standard i think) but i am contemplating taking the airbox lid off and making an adapter for a better filter setup, might even build a custom air box, and obviously rejetting the mikuni carb (it has a 155 main jet now. I have already lifted the float level a little cause it was running out after hard riding for a while. The exhaust pipe is bigger than i have seen on some trucks, the expansion chamber and muffler are all one piece with a 3/4 inch outlet coming from the bottom of the muffler so i'm sure there is some room for improvement there. The primary pipe is about 45mm dia so its plenty big enough.
I will try to put some pics up when i get a chance (mainly of the exhuast)
I havn't been able to find much info on it and i'm not right up on my 2strokes so any ideas or tips would be great! Thanks in advance.

you should be able to find a pipe and silencer combo for it, the yanks will modify anything!

try these guys:

like any 2 stroke im sure it would respond well to a pipe, filter, maybe mill the head for for more compression.. and then rejet to suit all that.

thanks mate, thats right along the lines of what i was thinking, dont wanna play with it too much (she wont let me) just thought i would give it a few tweaks while she isn't watching! i also want it to still be tame enough for her to ride and reliable enough that it doesn't become a money pit. i'd rather spend money on my toys than hers LOL

if anything those type of mods will make the power broader and easier to ride, depending on how they have designed the pipe. but by the looks of it, because it is a trail type quad, im sure they would have aimed to increase powere everywhere, and going off your description of the stock pipe, that wouldnt be very hard to do!

its not until you start porting and changing to bigger carbs etc that reliabilty and ridability starts going out the window...

good luck!

i'll look into a pipe round here first, surely i can find something that will fit (even if it does need modification) the standard pipe is like a four foot long torpedo! It is dead set huge, it would prob feel a lot stronger just from the weight reduction. i have a bit of stainless sheet tucked away at work and a tig so i might attempt an air box myself, shouldn't be too hard. It already looks like its running rich too so i prob wont have to change the jetting much.

im afraid you will only go backwards if you try putting a pipe on it thats not meant for it.

they arent like a 4 stroke, where just by being a bigger diameter pipe and better breathing pipe will help power.

you could try cutting up a stock pipe and seeing whats inside, they might be like a banshee with alot of perforated mesh etc to restrict things. banshees respond well to gutting all this crap out of the pipes, takes alot of work though, sounds like you are handy with a grinder and welder though so maybe fin a cheap pipe from somewhere (ebay?) and give it a go!

a mate of mine has modified about 3 sets of stock pipes now, he cuts them up along the welds and guts all the crap out of them, then welds them back up.

one quad with them on made 42hp on the dyno, no other mods except no air box lid and jetting. thats only about 2 or 3 hp down on a set of FMFs or similar. couldnt tell you what the curve looked like though, it was probably alot peakier than a good aftermarket pipe.

peterjameswalker i would be taking greenhuman up on his offer or look into the aaen pipe, im guessing either would wake the quad up considerably!

i had a play with the exhaust on it and replaced a few springs which DRAMATICALLY reduced the noise of the damn thing, it also idle smoother and seems to have a fair bit more torque. the missus had her first ride on it today and loved it. When she started doing figure 8's in the dirt i had a tear in my eye i was so proud! She seems more than happy with the power at this point so i think i will leave it for now and when she starts wanting more i will know exactly where to go with it. A bit of a carby cleanup and a new belt made all the difference in the world. only prob now is she wants to start coming on our camping trips with me and the boys so i think there is another fight coming on!
