I'm looking for Barry Ashenhursts email address. My computer died and I lost it. I have been told it's in the mag but I can't find an old one and the new one isn't in the shops yet... I can't find it anywhere on the net. Can any one dob in Bazz's address please?

Oh and a dumb question - Why doesn't Bazz have a web site for ATV Action?

I believe that the reason why there is no website is because the ATV Action is owned by Trader Group which in turn is owned by ACP who would have to pay for a website for the mag which is why it is taking so long to get happening.

Now I love Atv action being Aussie and all that BUT tonight I got shot down in badly when I was standing up for Barrys mag. There people out in the real world (because I don't live there) that have the opinion that ATV Action is just another AD for CAN AM. Well I fired up.... So we run it though a test of the amount of pics of quads.

Can am 35
Yamaha 20
Suzuki 9
Polaris 8
Honda 8
Kawa 5
KTM 4

Pretty clear cut . What do I say now?????

Pretty much says it all by itself Husky,

all i can say is lol .

But one thing we all know , Remember that we all think our own quad , be it yamaha or honda is the best brand on the market , and really at the end of the day if we are happy with that , who do we have to prove it too.

hang on - we would all advertise our preference if we had the money to do so.... unless we already thought we don't need to advertise - cause our brand is just the best Rolls eyes Talking around the pits - i have found many previously supported riders are not now sighting the idea that the brand has a preformance history. So which is worst - money thrown around or over confidence - on the part of the powers that be?
I can't say much as I have yet to see the latest copy Rolls eyes

VJ, far too cryptic for me to understand ol mate. Do you mean big players don't bother to get off their laurels long enough to push their brand with an aussie mag? Whereas new comers have to?

Aussie ATV action is what we make it, because its ours. If some blokes think that it is too Ca-AM orientated then get them to throw some photo's of themselves on their HondaYAMAzuki, at the magazine.

I'm sure the likes of Bazz would have no drama with reader feed back. I think the magazine is a great read. I can honestly say I preferred the last issue of Australian ATV Action over my last issue of Dirtwheels. And I've got a collection of Dirtwheels mags that go back to 1985.

So what if can am are over represented, they are the only realy manufacturer to support the scene here, its a shame they waste so much of it on racing buts it their dollar, but they do it so thats good for us, so at least we get a decent mage to look forward too, and if you go back 4 years or so and it would have been yamaha, they were every where.

Thats one way of saying it - I do think most of the long term players in the quad market believe themselves well established and rely on loyal consumers... Talking to a talented racer I asked about what he gets in sponsorship this year - he said "nothing now cause they don't think they need to advertise" And that was a major player!

I think the magazine would have more variety if the large players tried a bit harder in improving their products.

No matter what it is - a John Deere or New Holland Genisis Tractor, Husqvana or Harley Davidson, Yamaha or Honda - they all have one or more problems which normally can be fixed. If they had their big $$$ design departments work harder and quicker then release notes on how to get the best from their products already out on the tracks/dunes while reducing the repair costs. This would reinforce customer loyality. The manufacturers and consumers would benefit. And then Bazz would be busy advertising the developments...

The new models may even get more demand as the sport grows and consumer confidence strengthens.

I'm reading the new issue at the moment and it's great as it allways is.

But funnily enough there is a big article on a Can-Am's new model line up?

G'day everyone. Hope you're all still employed and still cruisin'.

I've seen the comments on the number of Can-Am pics in the latest issue, and the perfectly reasonable arguments you're making for a web site, so I'll try to explain what's going on at my end.

First, if I favour any manufacturer it's because they support ATV ACTION with test units and advertising. If they show no interest in the magazine or in what you guys are doing, I tend to show little interest in them. I'll get a kick in the arse for saying that but that's the way it is.

That's not why there were plenty of Can-Am pics in that issue though. The explanation is that right now, four manufacturers have decided not to give us their product, for testing or anything else. Their reason: "We can't afford to turn a brand new quad into a used quad just for a magazine story".

If nothing else, that shows how difficult the current financial climate is for some of these guys. From a personal point of view it's also very disappointing - from a global perspective I think our mag is as good as any and a lot better than most, and the photos are a lot better as well - but being denied new models from three of the major manufacturers makes ATVA extremely difficult to fill.

American ATV mags, or the ones that are left, get whatever they want whenever they want it. In Australia, I get what they'll give me. Every issue I start with about 72 blank spaces on my issue plan where stories have to go, and I think, Jeez, how am I gunna do this? That's why I had to travel to five states for the issue that's out there now, why I rode Thumb Pump 300 (or tried to), why I walked through a swamp to get pictures in Darwin and drove around in bloody circles trying to photograph the Condo 750. This is the most difficult mag I've ever had to put together.

As for a web site, I agree with all of you; this mag should either have a web site, or be one instead of a magazine. The problem is, I don't own this magazine, I merely put it together for the publisher. I'm a freelancer too, I'm not 'on staff', and it'd be a serious conflict of interest if I started my own ATV web site and then got advetising support for it. The publisher would consider that treason and fire me and he'd have every right to. The only way I can start a web site - and I'd like to - is to leave ATVA and do it on my own.

But that's a tricky business. I'm 63, and at this stage in my life I don't fancy chucking in my job to work on something that would take a very long time to reimburse me for the risk.

I guess what I'm saying here is that putting out a magazine doesn't go as smoothly as some of you might imagine. I sometimes email major corporations with product enquiries and never get a reply. Quads don't turn up when I've flown interstate to photograph them and no-one is prepared to apologise or even explain. It's not a doddle, it's bloody hard work.

A web site? Bring it on!

-Bazz.

Well said Bazz, I thought your latest mag was the best yet, especially liked the readers pics section, & no I don't ride a can-am, but if they're the only ones that are supporting the cause well good on them.
cheers....
Happy reader.

Thanks for putting up your comments Baz. At least everyone now knows what is going on behind the scenes in the industry. It is tough but you are doing a fantastic job mate.

Not to take the it away from Bazz. But i have a mate who designs web pages that could help out with a set up. Maybe we the readers should have a poll on what we could do to get one going and what should be the base for every issue. I dont want it to take anything away from this site. So no forum, forsale, wanted etc. This site is gold for what it has do over the years and will keep on doing for its members. This web site should be set up for updates on race meets and social rides, product review, veiwers pics, profiles of racers and up and coming racers, bike set up, technique section( jumping, cornering etc). road tests etc.

So thats my two cents worth anyway. Its just if bazz has his hands tied, why cant we as a group do something to get it started. As it will be for all of us to view an enjoy. The future of our sport (in aus) is growing and in no time it will take over the motocross scene (from the two wheelers). So lets buckle up and get set for the ride of our life.

Thanks for reading
James

the question then is who pays for it, and who is going to write the reviews and administer the whole thing, not to take away from a great idea but all of that can turn into a pretty big task, I have personally looked at doing a similar thing an an alternative to but also to not be in direct competition with the ATVA mag (who I also write for on occasion) but the major question always ends up how to get enough money to do it, the Mag is struggling to get real advertising, clubs are struggling to get sponsorship dollars from advertising so where would the funding come from? remember that we dont have the market that the US has so we also don't have the massive marketing budgets that they have to pay for all the websites and forums over there, a website here though could be susbscriber based, so pay for a certain amount of access over time ( at a much smaller price than you would pay for a magazine) which would cover for some one/s to collate and edit the content and administer the whole thing, if people think it would be a good idea and would be willing to put something towards it in that way then I'm all for it and would be happy to have a go at it.
