Hi,

I'm looking at buying a new four wheeler for hunting and recreational use. ( Think I'll need 4x4?)
I pretty new to quads as i've only ever had 2 wheeled machines before. I'm pretty restricted by the price. 11500 would be the max I can spend.
I was looking at Yamaha Big bear 400 or maybe the 350 or the honda TRX420FA or the FM.

Would a TRX 250 2wd do the job?

Is the IRS rear a must???
I like the simpicity of the air colded Big Bear and the Diff lock?
I want something that is reliable and that will last.

Hi there and welcome to the forum

I started out on a 225 cc yamaha and have progressed up to a 700 cc quad.

I personally think if you wantr to do shooting and rec use , that the bigger cc quad will suit your purpose a lot better, as it will sustain higher speed for a lot longer without wringing its neck,

The irs rear end makes so much of a difference more comfortable and better ground clearance.

I just sold a yamaha grizzly 660 with winch and bash plates , , take a look at the grizzly 660 im sure you would be surprised at how they perform, very reliable machine, 18000 klm on my old one and still going strong, take a few different quads for a ride if you get the chance

Hi mate
I am only new to the quad scene (ridden plenty only owned 1)

You will get a decent quad for that money i could have got a 09 550 fap Grizzly for 11200 so i am sure if you look around you could get that probably better.

The IRS is great i have been swapping from mine (08 660 grizzly) to a mate 400 Honda it is half as comfy

I went the Grizzly because everyone i spke to said they are so reliable and will never give you cramas (touch wood) so we will see i have only just clicked over 11 hours on mine but about the head off for a week camping ect so will see how it goes.

I was going to go the 550 but got offered a new 660 cheap so i grabbed it.

All the best with your choice (if you are in sydney you can come have a ride of my 660 if you want to try one out)

I was looking at a new bike because I was going to trade in my 09 KTM 200 exc. If can sell it privately I'll look around for a bigger secondhand bike. But don't think I'll really need the bigger cubes most of the riding will be tight scrud and hilly. But I think the IRS is a must
Not to may good quads around up here though.

Thanks for the replies.

$11.5k can get you a very nice new or used quad. I wouldn't get anything smaller than a 500 in a utility quad. And yes, get 4X4.

It would struggle with what you want to do.

No, but it sure is nice.

Nothing too complicated with the water cooled quads. If you ride in really hot environments water cooled is probably better.

Can't go wrong with either Honda or Yamaha.

I agree with big jon

i would not have anything under a 500 cc in a utility qyad , for 11 grand you should nearly be able to buy a brand new 660 grizzly and you wil be glad you did it will last longer than the small bore quads and will have plenty of grunt

Hi I just picked up a 750 Brute Force only 1200 klm and 122 hours as new
with new ITP wheels and tires 3500 lb winch and cargo box for $8800 so look around and bigger cc are better, and if you can ride a 400cc through the bush then you will go through just as easy on a larger bike, my friend and I go Bow hunting in the mountains and he rides a 09 Polaris 850 and we go every where and some.

nice choice, I'm been thinking long and hard on the bruteforce for a while now, what are the controls on this like ? I mean the business end, the bars, levers and like, one thing I only doubt is the diff lock selector, whats it like where it counts in the bush. Very Happy

Hi Yogie in reply to the Brute Force, the controls are very much like a Griz
660 , the diff lock works good and you do get used to feathering how much bite that you want, They do make an after market lever lock, I will pick one up myself then I can lock it in at a push of a button. Im running 27 " ITP tires which does slow the bike down to a 100 k's but they climb fantastic and give's me 320 mil clearance under my foot well, I found since I put the winch on I get a little shake in the front wheels, But I will over come this with a steering dampener I have owned a Lt Suz a 600 Griz a 660 Griz a Raptor a Predator and now the Brute and I love it.
Ps I have just installed a Temperature Gauge and drilled and tapped a sensor into the thermostate howsing and it works a treat.

It's only my personal view, but I don't like that colour on a utility quad.

Apart from that it's a very nice quad.
