good quality filter setup foam or k&n depending on your riding terrain
Set of pipes and rejet the carbs is best bang for buck. Allow up to 1000-1300 to do this depending on the pipes you purchase. _________________ Queensland Quad Riders Association

after you have done what buzz said, get the head milled 25thou and advance the timing 4 degrees.
milled head = $30-$50 (any machine shop with a mill)
adjustable timing plate = $50 - $100 off ebay or modify your stock one with a die grinder.
what type of riding do you do? I recommend DMC alien pipes. _________________ 2002 SE Banshee |

While we're on the topic, and seeing as there are some good advisors around...
Are the STD pipes really that bad?
They seem to ride quite well and offer good broad power where a 'normal' rider might ride in most 'normal' weekend thrashing about conditions.
Does just high flow mufflers increase this broad performance respectably?
I would think it would, i mean reduced back pressure but same timing bla bla.
So would 20thou off head, slight timing advance, 98 fuel, high flow cans, make a sensible and healthy improvement to stock while retaining maximum all round ridability? _________________ Can-Am X Team

STD banshee pipes suck. Toomeys are top shelf and work well.
Take 0.040" off the head.
Go for a steering damper!
You will also need to up your clutch springs. Get some barnetts and replace every second one (three out of the six in there)
These are all cheap mods that work.
With a little more $$$:
Mild port job, 28mm KEIHIN "D" slides work brilliant. _________________ When I'm racing I'm living..... everything else is just waiting. |

run the barnett springs if you want, but dont go near their plates. get genuine fzr1000 fibres. you will need to upgrade your clutch once you add pipes etc..
stock pipes suck indeed, they are choked up with perforated mesh inside the pipes and stuff that resembles muffler packing.
however, they perform well after you cut them open, gut them, and weld them back up. i have a mate whos done a few sets now, alot of work, but seems to be worth it. he has run one on the dyno with shaved head, timing and filter, and it made 42hp, only 2hp less than with fmf fatties. i cant comment on the curve though, i havent seen the graph.
40thou is too much for most (all?) banshee heads. they are all a little different, so to be exact, do the solder squish test and take off however much it needs to get down to 40thou squish clearance. 25thou off is a safe bet.
toomeys are excellent, 2nd best only to DMCs on a stock banshee. we have tested T5s and Dmc aliens back to back, the dmcs are a little better, especially for the type of riding you are going to do. but if you find a better deal on toomeys, get them.
rockymountainatvmc.com is a good place to get em.
if you were handy with a welder and a grinder, and had access to a mill, you could mod the pipes, shave the head and modify the timing plate all for free, $90 to add a filter, little bit more for some jets and a 15t front sprocket, and youll beat every stock 4 stroke there is in a drag on bitumen, and quite a few modded ones too if you are light and can ride. _________________ 2002 SE Banshee |

Agreed on the Barnett plates. I only ever ran std plates and the reason for every second spring is to reduce some of the clutch pull at the lever but still had plenty of bite. The barnett springs are good, the ETC (I think that is what they were called) were not very good. _________________ When I'm racing I'm living..... everything else is just waiting. |

let me outline what i think should be the stages of banshee modifications.
for the average guy, starting with a bone stock banshee, who does all different types of riding. (but obviously you like the faster wide open stuff thats why you bought a banshee).
Stage 1:
Pipes
Shaved Head
Advanced Timing
Filter
Jets
15T front sprocket
approx. 30% hp increase over stock.
approx. $1000
Stage 2:
Noss Cool Head 19cc domes
Keihin/Mikuni 28mm flat slide carbs
Carbon tech reeds and modified reed cages
Ignition
another 15% increase in power (50% over stock)
another $1400.
Stage 3:
Porting
4mm Stroker crank
with stage 3 the power and pricing is not so clear cut. you may want to change your pipes and carbs to match the porting.
but like i said, for the average guy, power will be anywhere from 58-65hp, and cost around $1000, but you would want to upgrade your carbs to at least 33s, so add another $500. (sell your old ones to recoop costs)
after stage 3, you start getting into aftermarket cylinders (or RZ pv). this is when things start to get exxy, and you really need to know a thing or two about building and tuning two strokes.
hope that helps, mark. _________________ 2002 SE Banshee |
