Mate you'll all see the video one day.
I didn't actually take any photos.
Out of all the Rene's / Outlanders that went, I think there were only two that did belts.
One of those was a 400 belt fitted to an 800 because the owner had pre fitted the 400 belt when he did not have an 800 belt handy, and simply wanted to try the concept out.
The other was one that was fitted to the same bike that did the same trip last year and countless other km's in between.
So he got his monies worth out of that belt too.
2 belts... a bit of a storm in a tea cup realy.
One Renegade freakishly broke a bolt at the rear pulley, but that was just a one in a million freak.
I think any other Can-Am problems did not have anything to do with reliability...
For example out of control ridden up a tree, head on with a landcruiser, etc.
Its a big ride maybe equivalent to 100 MX races of ride time and nearly every bike had either a minor breakdown or accident of some description.
If I was going to climb trees or run down landcruisers... I'd rather be on my Renegade any day
My Outlander was trouble free, went everywhere and crossed every river unassisted.
Not many did that.
I even parked in the middle of one for half an hour to film the action and then rode straight out.
Tough ride in places, that's for sure.
We definitely found the limits of the sport quads, but I could not believe what some of them would get through.
Their riders did an outstanding job of geting everything out of thier machines with minimal problems.
You'll have to do the trip next year. _________________ Can-Am X Team

Also love to know from bullet any other 4x4 take part other than Cam Am?
Or was it all sports bikes?
I just wouldnt have thought they werent as suited to the top end run.
Perhaps the lack of mud? River crossings mostly walk throughs?
Obviously the biggest non-race run in Australia how genuinely suited is it to non-race bikes. As in more sports trail market. I had asked and been given the go ahead to take a Razr cart.
Could you ride the Yam Grizz up? Polaris scrambler?
I know they are looking for new or next to new bikes for maintenance issues. _________________ www.asho.com.au for your shooting and outdoor needs

There was a Polaris Scrambler.
And it went really well and looked really comfy too.
It went everywhere and was very good in deep water.
It was a bit slow on the road and high speed sections and I think I remember comparing fuel and it used more than the 800 Can-Ams.
Maybe not as much fun if you wanted to be a nutter.
Saying all that, but I didn't ride it. _________________ Can-Am X Team

about 26 of the 40 odd quads were Can-Am's.
In 2800kms, Renegade and Outlander 800's excelled accross the board.
It's hard to get a quad that can do everything the best.
But the big Can-Am's will...
Top speed nearly equals a piped Raptor 700 or LTR450 at about 125kmh.
Beach drags always first off the line.
Will push through about 1 metre of water without problems.
Renegade can be jumped about 6ft high at any speed.
Comfy cruising on 110kmh all day, and easy to ride.
Also tow started a Landcruiser with trailer.
It depends on what you want to do.... |
I'm selling all my worldly possessions and getting a Can-Am. What can't it do? _________________ Don't close your eyes during the crash, you'll miss the best part |

Thats nice looking machine, very much in the mould appearance wise of current sportman models but that tickle different.
No power steering though?
So the Yam still stands alone? Although no longer a top contender in the power stakes has it enough for what people want to use it for?
The "capacity war" still to be won |

Power steering is definately food for thought, but how much? We'll see I guess.
Def looks the biz. Lovely paint. But your paying (a lot?) more in manufacturing and replacement costs for the quirky but sleek little protrusion where they connect the front/ rear racks. But I love that style wise.
What will Can Ams release look like '10? Probably same/similar to what it is now? Will they have responded to criticisms about frames and belts? (Well better than say the std bash plates and unknown how belt upgrade will go for 09) Will they get power steering? Surely their capacity is just sleeves and pistons away from 850 if they want it, or is 1000cc just a new top end away?
Im suprised that Polaris stuck with just 850 when Arctic Cat already had 950 on the board. Will 1000cc be the holy grail of sports/rec bikes like road bikes? (VTR, TL/SV, Ducati)
I believe it is just such an exciting time for quads, more so even quads in Australia, as we get more sales, people power must prevail??
Whats actually in the pipelines?

And if you read the whole image url on Yogies post its says CanAm 500!! (See page 3)
If youre getting that air on the 500 that weighs as much as the 800, its just staggering.
