well as i see it ,0 -20 k seems physical choppy stuff ,always get knocked up in this as the start of the race and people everywhere, adrenalin, certain things may catch your eye, 20-70k lot of free flowing faster sandy stuff [fun] 70-120k open fast bulldust, gravely with a few rocky rises, [don`t like it much] 120-200k whoops and more whoops, lot of fun but hard work after the first 500 of them, but they did grade a heap of them out in different sections, supposedley to give us a bit of a break , 200- 230 finke, opens up onto a road section fast as with the last 5k from the river to the finish line back into some rough , rocky ,knobby stuff, but fun.
but hey that`s just my take on it , got down in 3.35 back in 3.17, and at 48 look forward to doing it again next year.

Are the whoops big enough to ride in and out of or small enough to ride over.

If you’re interested in this stuff, did you know according to my GPS and hear rate monitor
The following statistics for the finke race

Alice to Finke
Average speed 78.8kph (slower than trip home due to better overall time on the way home and head wind to finke)
max speed of 117kph max speed (slower than the trip home due to head wind)
Distance was 222.4km
2hrs 49min 15 sec
Calories burnt 4436 ( that’s 12.5 mars bars approx or about the equivalent of a tour de France rider on a 200km stage)
average beats per minute 165bpm
maximum beats per minute 179bpm, my maximum heart rate is 189bpm

Finke to Alice
Average speed 80.5kph
max speed of 129kph
distance was 222.5km
2 hrs 45min 51 sec
Calories burnt 4343
average beats per minute 169bpm
maximum beats per minute 182bpm, logged at the 50-60km to alice (due to me and Chad Mckay racing and doing an average of 101kph in the whoops)

i use a garmin forerunner 301 GPS and heart rate monitor in the flexx bar pad. works a treat and you can log and record every metre of riding including elevation and way points.
