HI there,
OK..so the wife thinks I'm crazy, but after having a blast on a quad over at Tangalooma, I just can't get it out of my system.... I wanna buy a quad and find somewhere legal to ride it, Iv'e got the details for conditional rego etc..but need advice on what to buy...my plan is to buy a cheap and cheerful chinky thing, say, 250cc and, if after a couple of months I decide this is really for me, then I'll go and buy a "proper" one (raptor?).... I'll be moving down to the Gold Coast in the new year, sort of Helensvale/Robina area so if anybody knows of any leagl state forest/tracks or trails suitable for quads please give me your advice...I've seen a web site for Black Duck Valley which seems to be held in high regard ....but is over 2 hours journey from the Goldie... so ideally I'd like to hear about anything within an hours drive....Thanks for any/all responses...John. _________________ JOHNO'S PEARL OF WISDOM.. Hey bloke , good to see you got that "crazy" bug thats going round,
my brother thought the same start out with brand new china bike to do some pigg'n, to get the feel but when he got it home it'd only do 50 km /h and rattled the fillings out of his teeth . Needless to say he wanted to sell it the next day . For the same price he could have had a good reliable used Japper, just food for thought! You will enjoy it if you find a quad that suits your needs |

Hi John
A "cheap and cheerful chinky thing" might cure you of quad bug for all the wrong reasons.
I think if you spend a bit more on 2nd hand jap quad you will have better resale if you decide it's not your thing.
Have a look at prices on used suzuki/kawasaki 400, warrior/raptor 350, honda 250/300/400ex & blaster 200 all good reliable quads without being scary powerwise.
If your budget only permits asian quad check out parts availability before buying.

HI GUYS,
I hear you about the chinky stuff.... I have heard that some people have had some bad luck with them but they are VERY inexpensive at 1300 bucks its cost IS only one tenth of a raptor at 13 grand...and as, such my expectations of quality are not that high. my mate reckons to strip down and rebuild the whole thing when it arrives in the create. we costed out about 130 bucks for high tensile steel 'wireloc' bolts around the bike. and apply a bucket of grease!....so it works out cheaper to get say...six months use out of chinky thing and then throw it away, rather than suck on the depreication of even a modestly priced second hand 'Jappy' _________________ JOHNO'S PEARL OF WISDOM.. I have a blaster for $2800 if you are keen for a Yamaha?
Don’t go the china thing – there don’t handle well and you will end up not enjoying the sport
Try ebay you can get cheap farm bikes to start off on

Do you & everyone here a favour and buy this quad (or something similiar). If you keep it a year you'll probably still get $2,500 for it.
If you buy a Chinese piece of crap you will do nothing but whinge, I guarantee it.
Again:
PLEASE DON"T BUY CHINESE!!!!!! _________________ Don't close your eyes during the crash, you'll miss the best part |

Do yourself a favor and buy the blaster (or something similar) couldnt agree with BigJohn more
My son has raced quad in my profile for 1 season in speedway they are fine with a few mods
In the motocross series i have replaced front end , 5 shocks rebushed front end and countless other repairs
Since having a TRX90 we have never looked back only thing i do is change oil
We were like you got the bug and needed to feed it I now have Honda TRX90 , TRX 450 & POLARIS SCRAMBLER 90CC but still have chinka as backyard muck around

OK guys,
...I suppose.. I signed up to this forum to get advice...clearly the chinky takeaway is not an option......you are all strongly suggesting I go for something more sushi flavoured from the 'land of the rising yen' so I'll guess I'll have to rethink my plans a little. However after looking at HUGE'S quad for sale here, I realise I'm going to have to put a lot more 'folding wonga' into this project. Whilst I'm sure HUGE'S quad is a fine machine, I'm honestly not sure that 200cc is going to be upto the job of hauling a (100kg+) fat b*stard like me around, I imagine a 250cc would be on the very cusp of doing the job and, ideally something much bigger say 300-450 cc . So here's a question for you all...lets say I budget 5 grand for a quad, I would prefer to buy from a dealer for warranty and backup, and would not consider anything thats been modified, especially the engine...(I've had my fingers burt before) so what could I expect for that kind of dosh?...Also on another note...All this depends on finding somewhere legal to ride within an hours drive of the goldie...any ideas??? I don't mind getting the conditional rego if i have to...I'm not too bothered about being involved in racing either...I just wanna go and have fun without having to worry about forking out $600 fines......waddaya reckon?......Johno _________________ JOHNO'S PEARL OF WISDOM.. HUGE is the guy to stay in contact with for social rides, he gets around. Also keep checking on here as most guys will post up when they are riding.
With a limit of 5,000 you can pick up a nice 2nd hand raptor (660) or a 450 in decent condition.
Hope you get on a quad sooner than later. _________________ Mic

Going with what Dingo said. I was going to sugest this quad to you but it is over your budget of 5,000.

If you do spend the extra money, you will not be dissapointed with the LTR. _________________ Mic

don't touch the chonger gear! no matter what you end up with ,your gonna want bigger or faster as your ridding progresses that half the fun expensive but fun- what u will need is a slush fund or a hidden acount to buy all the goodies. _________________ yfz 450 |

Welcome mate. My kids had mates with that chinko stuff & they prety well got burnt by it. If you keep your ear to the ground & look for a bargain you can get a relatively new Jap quad for a very low price.
My YFZ450 had 75% original rear tread, was still the current model. hadn't been stacked & I got that for $4,200. That was a steal.
My LTZ400 had 90% rear tread, was under 12 months old, hadn't been stacked & cost me $6,500. That was a good price.
My banshee was overpriced at $3,800. It needed a bit of work on the suspension & frame, but the engine hasn't missed a beat.
I sold a Suzuki Ozark for $3,500 to some friends. It hadn't been rolled & the plastics all straight. It had been ridden to the end of the earth & back.
The new owners love it.
You don't have to spend a fortune to have fun if you buy wisely. Be ready to take advantage of a bargain. But make sure its a bargain. _________________ 06 LTZ400

Not much "legal" riding within 1hr of the goldie but when you get a quad let us know and we'll show you where to ride within 1hr of the goldie.
Just have to accept that we do what we do without permission at times buts its ok as so many people do it I think it would be hard for the police to do much about it.
If you want MX then you have a few club options.
Send a PM if you are interested in seeing any of these (not so legal) places before you buy so you know what your up for when you fancy a trail ride.
If a copper is on a mission to f@#k you your rego wont matter sh!t as they will do you for something else guaranteed!!! _________________ RAPTOR 660:

By the way my mate has 2 Chinese dogy sh!t boxes. Parts cost stuff all and if you buy the right one you will even find shops with spares open on Sunday's!!! Try that with a name brand!!!!
So if you are handy with the spanners you'll be fine.
Cant get my mate to part with his for a name brand????
I also think you would be suprised how well these things go even at only 200 or 250cc _________________ RAPTOR 660:

OK.... so now I'm on the lookout for an 'as new' unmodified suzi ltz400, preferably I'd like to buy from a dealer, any suggestions?..But I have another problem ..... due to the nature of my job (I'm a Business Analyst contracting to government) which I can't really discuss, means that I have to live life whiter than white for the duration of my contract...(I was hired to replace a guy in May who got fired for getting three demerit points on his licence!)... so I'll have to stick to legal sites for the time being, I wondered if there is any state forest that can be used (perhaps with rego and permit) down on the goldie? _________________ JOHNO'S PEARL OF WISDOM..
