I get a bit annoyed at "experts", and the way figures get manipulated to make some point.
And some other expert then uses those figures to make "Just Decisions".
http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2010/07/23/2961902.htm?section=justin
These "experts" reckon over the last 10 years, 98 quad riders have lost there lives on farms on quad bikes. About 27 of them due to roll-overs. According to this mob, quad bike accidents are the leading cause of deaths on farms.
Remembering that, the figure is over 10 years.
And while that is not good, I can't help but think there is a significantly higher percentage of people killed/maimed doing other forms of recreation like fishing, push-bike riding and bush-walking.
And as this report claims these to be work-related accidents,
my cynical view-point is that it will be used to justify upping insurance premiums and putting more people on watch-dog duties........
Lousy nannies........... _________________ Remember. We elect politicians, but we have to deal with bureaucracy.

Stupid green freak socialist ABC try to demonise every part of our life.
They want everyone to live in big cities jammed up against each other and have all land including farms closed off to people.
Remember, fishing is the biggest killer in Australian sport/leasure, and the Vics are trying to ban that now. |

Quad bike related. Does that mean he went to work on his quad and got caught in his combine harvester and died but there was still a quad there so lets add it on??? _________________ Has turned to the Dark Side! |

The photo in that story has to be made up as farmers don't wear helmets while riding quad bikes (or motorbikes or wear seatbelts in their cars) on their farms, which is why most of them get killed!!!
It's the whole "it's ok i'm only going steady" or the "i've done this a million times" attitude but isn't it amazing how many people get seriously hurt or killed under the "it'll b ok" attitude.
I have a number of farming friends who do and say these exact things and they have had some really major close calls in their time. _________________ The main thing is to have fun I just think second place is no fun

Linc,
In QLD your still allowed to fish, but the EPA would rather you did it at Coles and Woolies......
Clarkie.
I don't know how they pidgeon hole it.
You could be right about the harvester. No mention of whether having a gun or a heart condition near the quad either.
Nekelec,
That photo would have been supplied by the WHSO responsible for the report. Helmet and ROPS noted. Rops reducing tractor fatalaties also noted.
And as you know, a lot of farmers have died waiting for a decent break. too!
Given that the whole report is tied to costs and money, don't be too surprised if the ( various ) Govt uses this report to justify spending a few hundred million to save some of that " billion $ it costs to die farming annually" by forming a few agencies to help. _________________ Remember. Educate the dumb farmer how to use a quad, its not a tractor but they use it like one, there was a survey done on farm maintenence and farmers have the lowest score of anyone using machinery!!! _________________ Wear Cammo so nobody can see your stuff ups

Yup, if it ain't broke, don't fix it!
It doesn't help but, when certain manufacturers make massive overstatements about the towing capacities of their quads!
Qod,
Umm, the whole report was done by a Government Dept. And that department would have prepared a media brief......
I can't say that I agree with you about the ROPS in a farm situation but.
Besides, a ROPS would give you somewhere to hang your spotty up when your "checking the fences" at night. _________________ Remember. We elect politicians, but we have to deal with bureaucracy.

I rolled a Honda TRX 500 into a new dry dam about 10 years ago & I almost put a tractor into a channel & I drove a Landcruiser ute into a dam. 1 thing I will say is that farmers have very little regard for safety, or at least where I worked. 3 or 4 cans for smoko was nothing strange at 9:30, 10 am. was nothing strange! "Never driven a tractor before, Push that and pull this. You'll be right. Just don't run over any one " I remember falling into a sink hole and being swallowed up. The only thing to save me was my long handled shovel. Which I still have today? Those were the days. _________________ If its got wheels I'll drive it!

Yeah. I've worked for a lot of people, and not just farmers, whose attitude and mine didn't exactly mesh. I'm not a safety terrorist, and I'm certainly not the sort of bloke who needs a 8 hour site induction, but yes, some of them I'd rather forget. _________________ Remember. apparently more people die from suicide than car accidents every year in queensland. you don't see police running around with "suicide detectors" and fining people.Oh yeah,no income from that.

Yes ,you are right about "accidents".most are hardly an accident.not trying to argue etc,but there are a lot of innocent victims of suicide, like family and friends left behind ,not knowing why.but this a little off topic.
One day we will all be required to have a sign when leaving our driveway that states "caution, other vehicles may be encounted"

To replace the points, pins and bearings easy to but when the machine is running every day it becomes a little more difficult. changing filters & giving it a grease is easy but proper maintenance is a little harder. I know of farms that have cats running 24/7 when it(# 1 cat) stops or malfunctions that starts # 2 Cat for the next 24/7 nonstop stint & Our 2002 AU falcon with 180,000 kms has only had 2 oil changes. We change our trucks every 5,000 _________________ If its got wheels I'll drive it!

I'm not privy to the whole report, how accurate the data collected is and what other factors are involved in these deaths.
Statistics tend to be not very personal.
And ending up dead is fairly personal.
I have no doubt that adequate rest, maintenance and suitable safety equipment and practices, or lack there of, are factors in many of these
accidents.
98 quad labelled fatalities over 10 years in that sort of industry....................
Sorry boffins & reporting journalists, blaming the quads does not equal reality. _________________ Remember. We elect politicians, but we have to deal with bureaucracy.
