Anyone looked at putting quadbikes on top of a camper trailer?

I have a camper with a steel lid and boat rack which I am wondering about using to cart the bike/s over to the beach when we go camping.

Bike will be 1.5m off the ground and the CoG will be 'interesting' but can't see any real problem with the idea. Trailer is a custom build to a farmers specifications Very Happy . Saves taking 2 vehicles anyway.

Not often I'm not overloaded when we head off Laughing

5.5t over the weighbridge then pull it up sandy tracks

Strengthen the feet for the rack and get a couple of loooong ramps and I reckon it would work a treat.

I don't think weight is an issue.

What's an average 4wd quad weight? 350-380kgs? Don't think the 2wd bikes would get up there.

I've had that much weight in firewood up there.

50mm square axle gives me about 2t and as the trailer is usually only loaded to 1.6t (2.5t on one extended trip) I am comfortable with the extra weight and a bit of load re-distribution.

Centre of gravity (CoG) . Well, the thing isn't exactly a troopie with a roof top tent and a stack of jerry cans on the roof. Don't do a lot at speed and I can make another rack for the roof that will have the bike sitting on the hardtop which will bring it down about 150mm.

Will have to remember to stay away from Macca's drive through's and underground parking Laughing

Otherwise I'll just stick the ute, tinnie and bikes on the semi and take that Laughing

If that doesnt work their is a mob that builds camper trailers with enough room on the drawbar to fit a full quad, I think they are "metalink" trailers not sure have to check one of me old mags they advertise in or Jayco caravans now have 2 models that you can park bikes in the back of biggest is about 22ft long 'Basestation' and the 'work n play' are the model names. good luck with ya trailer mods tho cos I dont think the Jaycos are that cheap

it also has a strut assisted boat rack and a point to mount the outboard unloaded it came in just under 900 kgs not real sure uf the loaded weight but the hilux pulls it no dramas

I watched this last night there is one of those campers in it. Much better idea for 4WDing to keep that CoG down
Smile

Link

You can imagine two bikes up top with the camper a little floaty. Hooking a rock on the down river side wheel & and a little under force from the water. With those 360deg couplings

Not a problem doing that. we had a very similar camper and I took it back to Albany to have a simple boat rack fitted just so I could make up a frame to carry two Polaris 400's. they did sit high and caused a bit wind drag, but it worked well. I bought a 6 metre length of tread mesh to make two 3 metre ramps. unfortuneately, I don't have any photos.

The yanks tend to do things big but here is one of there smaller outfits.

This one carried two 750 brute forces and was hauled behind a big dual-cab Chev or Ford or something like that. Total cost over there: < 15 grand

The Complete Campsite with an ATV on the front rack goes way over the towball down weight. Campers on the Run are even worse. I wondered how they licensed them, but after seeing chinese campers with drawbars bolted on with half a dozen M10 bolts obviously anything goes when licensing a trailer.

I remember seeing a QLD made tandem camper, can't remember the name, that ticked all the boxes for camping with quads. I seriously considered building mine as a tandem.

I could take the front box off and do the same as the complete campsite but then where do I put all the crap? I feel this is a worse place to put a bike than on the top anyway. I've seen more broken drawbars than trailers turned turtle.

Like the trailer Yogie. Very flash

I used the tread mesh on this...

wasnt cheap but so easy to clean the bikes.

I take it you are loading the 2 bikes from the side not the back. I had wondered about doing this to make it easier to ride on/off forwards.

If it is an Albany Camper then it will be a solid well built trailer.

Yogie, that is a really nice looking rig you've got going on there. Practical, relativly cheap and neat. In fact if you bought the whole ambo, then the cab chassis would make an excellent tow rig for your toy carrier come camper.

My only problem would be sleeping in the same room as all the poor souls that have lost their lives over the years. How the hell do you do that big fella? My wife would freak out if I bought an ambo home as a camper! Bugger that, I would freak out!

thanks fella, I got the box for a $400, and biult my own chassis, in hindsite, I wouldnt of made it so heay duty 100x50x4mm should have used 2.5 or 3 at the most. Just have to fit the hotwaterservice, shower and its done. to date it owes me about 4k with a bit of change. and for sleeping in it, its all about the head room eek

Yeah, we loaded from one side and reversed them off. We had an angle bar that we pulled the bike up to when tied down. Also gave us something to stop against.

Hey Yogie, that look more like expanda mesh. The stuff we used was about 300mm wide that is quite often used as walk way on roofs. It's about 50mm high as well so ther is no need to stengthen it. Look like prefabed ramps. Very grippy.

Hi guys..

This is the trailer I just built....

It fits 3 full size quads + 2 full size bikes + all the gear in the front waterproof box/wind deflector. The ramps I made from two alloy ladders that I welded some Amplamesh to.

They slide into a drop down panel on the side behind the front box.

She tows real nice (had it to 140 kph ) behind the cruiser..

Cheers...Rosco

tow ball down load isnt to bad cause the axle has been brought forward a heep so there is a heep of trailer behind the axle ,, put it this way before my suspension upgrade the hilux hardly sagged from the weight and doesnt at all now mine was pricey but i would hate to think of the caravens price tag ,,best and cheapest option would be to build a trailer for your quads then build a fram to support a rooftop tent or two
