i have an 04 banshee which when i start it, and rev it a little, the motor revs out bu its self. i quickly switch it off and switch it back on and starts to revs up again. sometimes it revs some times it doesnt.

after its warmed up and running for about 10 mins, its fine and runs like a dream, until i ride through a puddle which water splashes onto the bike. then this problem happens again for about 5-10 secs while im in gear, revving and picking up speed on its own till i switch it off. after this 10seconds or so, it runs normal. after i noticed this problem i tried to avoid puddles.

any reason or ideas why his may happen???

ive checked the carb boots but nothing that i can see. ill check again later this week.

but if the problem was the seals, wouldnt that cause the engine to idle abnormal, rev or cut out?

i bet you have removed your tors system? This is the reason yamaha fitted tors, because banshee carbs and moisture dont mix.

options are

1. new carb/s modern flat slide/s. im a single carb fan 36mm keihin flat slide. but if you go twins dont go over 28mm

2. Get some chrome slides (they were around but good luck finding some, maybe ask some 70-80s era road racers)

3. Polish the slide tunnel in the carb to a mirror finish. will have to be peroidically redone

4. Put the tors back on

5. Dont go through water or ride in the rain

spraying aerostart on and around the carbie boots/intake manifold (without getting it near the airbox intake) while the bike is idling might help you identify a crack or air leak. If the idle lifts then there's definitely a leak there somewhere.

have you had the carbies apart to clean them/check them, they could be dirty, you may have dropped a needle circlip, needle or return spring etc. A slide(s) musn't be returning (or major leak) to let it run at full-noise with the throttle closed. I'd check the throttle cable route, operation and condition etc.

yes the tors are removed, when i bought the banshee, the tors were removed and i dont have them. half of the slides have gone black, mostly the lower parts of the slide. i figured it was the moisture, but how would the moisture get in?

what would i need to polish the slide tunnel?
what size are the standard carbs? 28mm? and why do u recommend not to go over 28mm if i go twin?

spraying around the carbs was one of the first things i did. all seem to be good. sounds like what bansheebuzz mentioned about moisture getting in.
when i get a chance, ill be pulling the carbs apart and cleaning them and polishing the slide tunnel.

polish it with some metal polish and a rag and alot of hard work.

stock is 26mm, anything over 28mm for stock to mild engine is overkill

if they are standard banshee carbs they are 26mm.

they will have mikuni written on them and have one choke lever conecting to them both. and as bansheebuzz said it sounds like your slides or cable is sticking. lube you cable up well (get a cable lubing tool if you dont allready have one) and check you air filter assembly cant let any water through

i disconnected my tors and never had this problem with water. but i learnt to ride around water as i had massive electrical problems when my bike went though anywater wich made it start missing and stall. usually ended up with me zapping myself playing with the connections while it was idleing laughing

dont worry doorslamer, i had my killswitch wires back to front somehow,
riding in the rain at stockton, everytime i put my hand near the killswitch i would cop a nice big zap.....even with gloves on laughing laughing laughing

found the problem after not washing the motor of a days riding. noticed some dirt/petrol build up on the inlet manifold where the boost bottle goes. the rubber boot was split/cracked. something obvious but hard too see.

should i go genuine or aftermarket manifolds? not sure how much they are.

see if anyone has a second hand set with the crossover tube, ditch the boostbottle

other then that aftermarket would probably be just a cheap as buying from the stealership

i just called back up to confirm, after you mentioned they were cheap. they are 81 each. the boots from air box to carbys are 25. thats bloody annoying. the first bloke probably didnt know wat a inlet manifold was.

does anyone have any spares in good condition ??

Changed the cables, carbs to Keihin and fitted a Dual gasser for my dodgy hands sake and its good now, dont really know what the problem was though, suspect carbys. Do yourself a favour and get some Keihin flatslides, makes a big power difference
