http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/girl-11-dies-after-quad-bike-flips/2009/02/01/1233423023021.html

An 11-year-old girl has died after being thrown from a quad bike which flipped while going up a steep hill on a rural property on the NSW mid-north coast, police say.

Two girls, both 11, were riding the vehicle at about 3.45pm on Saturday at a property in Afflecks Road, Tipperary.

"It's believed the quad bike then flipped, causing the girls to fall, before the bike rolled onto the rear passenger," police said in a statement.

"As a result the girl sustained serious internal injuries.

"The rider's father, who was nearby, then carried the injured girl to the roadway and waved down a passing motorist who alerted emergency services."

Emergency services including a rescue helicopter were called to the scene from where the girl was flown to Manning Rural Referral Hospital.

She died prior to arriving at the health facility.

The second girl, who was the driver of the quad bike, was uninjured in the incident.

Police have seized the bike for further examination and are preparing a report for the coroner.

Another classic case of ppl who dont wear the correct riding gear, there doesnt seem 2 b any mention of a helmet?....so once again the quad gets the bad wrap & its the proper riders who respects these machines who suffer....thought r with the family, a death that could of been avoided

I found this on a 4wd forum and the fool who put it up said that there are 90 deaths per year on quads... I asked him to put some evidence up but of course there's none, but some people read it just believe it... bloody madness. Sad

matey death is as bad as it gets, but i know what you mean its all about the info given, as said before was there a helmet? this accident could have happened on anything to anyone, its a shame a person from a 4wd forum has used this tragic ACCIDENT to have a quick stab at the quad riders, and yes I know its not all 4wd users most wouldnt be so insensitive. my condolences to the family.

There was also another death besides the young girl. They mentioned in the article i read that there's going to be an inquiry into the amount of the deaths on quads. It's not the quads fault. People get on them thinking that they have four wheels they'll handle like a car and that seat can fit two people so i must be able to double with it. Complacency is the real issue. And with the death of the 11 year old, there was two kids on that bike. Maybe the parents need to be questioned as to why they let two on it in the first place and why they weren't wearing helmets....

has it been clearly established that they werent wearing helmets?

The girl suffered internal injuries, I dont think a helmet would have saved her.

That's just what life on the farm is like though. I'm from the country and I've never seen a farmer wearing a helmet while he's working, heck I've been guilty of it myself from time to time. That 11 year old girl has probably been riding quads since she could walk. Did the Article say anything about the parents blaming the quad itself??? Is there a website of that 4wd forum??? I wonder the little girl who was riding is going to handle her life from now on...

from the same website ...
http://www.smh.com.au/news/world/girl-4-dies-in-washing-machine/2009/02/04/1233423272293.html
A four-year-old girl in Southern California has died after climbing into a washing machine that began tumbling when her toddler brother hit its start button.

Orange County Sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino said Kayley Ishii apparently climbed into the front-loading washer on Monday afternoon.

Her 15-month-old brother either bumped or pushed the button, which started the machine.

Mr Amormino said the machine's controls were only 50 centimetres from the floor and the start switch was a simple push button.

The girl was in the water-filled, tumbling machine for at least two minutes before her mother found her.

An autopsy on Tuesday found Kayley died of blunt force trauma and the death was ruled accidental.

Is anything safe?

I care for kids who are removed from their homes for what ever reason, and we by law have to supervise them 24/7. Yes its bloody hard and these horrible accidents do happen but I get anoyed when parents have pay their whole lives for one moment.

I have 2 and I cant keep up; cant imagine having 4 of them.

Supervision is not the answer - education is. All supervision will acheive is you will watch your kid do something stupid then deal with the mess after it happens.

Education teaches them not to do it in the first place. Don't ride an over loaded quad on an uneven surface with out a helmet on.

The most tragic accidents are the ones that could have been avoided.

to a certain age kids cant even make a descion to feed themselves let alone to work out is that washing machine going to kill my little sister... and yes education and what i think is the biggie is role modeling to our kids, they watch everything we do good and bad. I'm glad mine are 18...

I'm pretty sure I seen something like this in a cartoon once when I was a kid. Never tried it though but maybe that's where she got the idea?

I know I'm not a really good example for this because sometimes my mate and I on his bigred 300 (mainly when my bike isn't going) both ride around on it but always with helmets and gear on and we don't go up crazy steep hills or do anything crazy like that. He also has a board mounted on his rear rack for his kelpie to sit on and it has handles on it to hold onto when we are both on it.
It still has to be safer than 2 people with no safety equipment riding up difficult hills but it still isn't the best thing.
