I had one that gave me endless trouble blowing Head gaskets. I had another one which was the Duncan Racing Kit and never ever had a problem. Definately worth the Money. Try and get a bigger oil cooler to go with it. Definately if you are doing a lot of sand riding. _________________ Its not if you win or lose but how you enjoyed the ride! |

Basically that is your answer right there! If you are starting to out ride your quad ... rather save up and start looking around for a bigger faster quad. The money you spend AFTER you hopup you quad is just not worth it! Unless you are able to open the quad every 10 hours or so, it really is not worth the money, hassle and embarisment of breaking down in the middle of no where!!
However, like most things, you may just get it right, and love it for many years to come ...
Hope that helps!! _________________ Mikey got 3rd in the Nationals!!

the 440's are a great thing if they are done right and not just thrown together, one of my mates had one on a 99 model EX with yoshi exhaust and hotcam and the thing absolutly hauled and you couldn't kill it!... normally the only real issue is they blow head gaskets because the extra compression and stress stretches the stock head studs, fit a set of heavy duty head studs and the problem is solved.
I'm in the process of completing a ground up makeover of my 04 EX, which is going to use a hotrods/cp pistons stroker/bigbore 460 kit, some people ask why i spent the money on it but at the end of the day i've had a lot of fun doing it and i've had experience messing about with it i'll never get anywhere else plus in the end i'll have a one of a kind bike that i can say i built.
They may be no 450 racer + the 400's are a good old bike. |

the chassis should be up to par from what ive read (same as 250R) so if you can get the engine to haul ass (which it sounds like it will!) i cant see why it wouldnt be competitive! _________________ 2002 SE Banshee |

i'll try and get some pics of some of my gear up tonight.
its good to hear there is still other people out there messing around with the good ol' 400ex
I was told right from the start over heatingwould be a problem i'm hoping i've fixed that tho... I've got a aftermarket oil cooler which i'm mounting in line with the stock one plus some aluminium air scoops and if it is still an issue there are lil 4" fans you can get to pull air through the coolers which aparently make a big difference. i'm hoping the bigger cooler should do the trick tho and considering they're only like $40 its a cheap fix. |

ballards used to do a "big fin" head mod where they would weld extra/larger fins onto the head. apparently it made a big difference.
im pretty sure they dont do that type of stuff anymore but i bet they could point you in the direction of someone who can. _________________ 2002 SE Banshee |
